Description:  A CN local passes the station sign as it heads northeast via former SOO rails at Shawano Junction, Fox Crossing (originally Town of Menasha until 14 Apr. '16), Winnebago Co., WI on 19 Feb. '19. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. The locomotive is about to pass that turnout and transition to the former C&NW rails to head for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna.

Description:  A CN local approaches Towmen Rd. as it heads northeast at Shawano Junction, Fox Crossing (originally Town of Menasha until 14 Apr. '16), Winnebago Co., WI on 19 Feb. '19. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here (out-of-frame to the right) which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. The locomotive is passing that turnout and transitioning to the former C&NW rails to head for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna. The almost completely snow-covered SOO rails continue toward Shawano, WI at lower left. The old, leaning sign next to the block signals at right says Junction One Mile (referring to Winchester Rd./Hwy. II, labeled as Winnebago Junction on some old maps). The facility in the background at left used to receive rail service via C&NW rails, but has not had a spur for quite some time.

Title:  GTW 5812
Description:  GTW 5812 passes a CN through freight along Union St. at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 30 Jun. '19. The historic Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility, 434 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond the train to the right. It was built in 1902 after the original 1892 building was destroyed by fire and is currently used for storage. The WC (later SOO) depot stood on the opposite side of Sherry St. from this building; it was built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St. used to be the yard. I don't know when the current yard was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard here.

Description:  A CN local approaches N. Lynndale Dr. as it prepares to spot a car for Wisconsin Building Supply, 222 N. Lilas Dr., out-of-frame to left, via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 4 Aug. '19. Local was on its way back from New London. The east end of the Marketplace Shopping Center, 2700 W. College Ave., Appleton, WI, can be seen at left. This portion is currently vacant, since WG&R Furniture moved to their new facility at the intersection of W. Wisconsin Ave. and Hwy. 41. If I remember correctly, this shopping center was built around the old Prange Way store in the 1980s.

Description:  A CN local rests along Union St. at the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 8 Nov. '19. Local was preparing to head for Waupaca, WI. The historic Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility, 434 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond the train. It was built in 1902 after the original 1892 building was destroyed by fire and is currently used for storage. The historic Murer House, 432 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond that. It was built by Felix Murer in 1892 and is currently home to Sherry Town Station. The WC (later SOO) depot stood on the opposite side of Sherry St. from those two buildings; it was built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. CN 9515 and GTW 5812
Title:  CN 9515 and GTW 5812
Description:  A CN local parallels W. Butte des Morts Beach Rd., passes Milepost BG 211, and approaches Stroebe Rd. as it heads northeast with 20 cars via former C&NW rails at Stroebe, WI on 10 Nov. '19. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016). The former SOO rails run parallel to the right. Modern maps tend to omit the W. from W. Butte des Morts Beach Rd. for some reason, it is also absent on the current street sign. Some old maps include the W., some old maps omit the W. Local was headed for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna.

Description:  A heavily powered CN local crosses W. 2nd St. as it prepares to set out a string of cars at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 15 Nov. '19. Local would continue on to Little Chute and Kaukauna. Carter's Caboose, 1428 W. 2nd St., a small, old, rail side tavern, is partially visible at left. It dates to at least 1887, when it was a grocery store operated by Peter Leininger. By 1901 it was a sample room (saloon) operated by John Sigl. By ‘30 it was a soft drink establishment owned by Hubert J. Merkel and August F. Brandt (Prohibition was still in effect). By ’36 it was a tavern operated by Albert Giesen, owned by Mrs. Gretchen Merkel. By ’38 it was Bob’s Tavern, still owned by Mrs. Merkel. It was the Junction Tavern from at least ’43-’71, still owned by Mrs. Merkel until at least ’60 (there were at least two different owners between ’67-’71). At some point in the ‘70s it became Pete’s Junction (possibly Palomino Pete’s Junction). It was called Netticoat Junction ca. the ‘90s (owned by Joanne M. ‘Nettie’ Nett). I haven’t learned how long it has been Carter’s Caboose.

Description:  A CN local momentarily fouls Racine St. while working in the former SOO yard at Menasha, WI on 6 Dec. '19. The small white building in the background, at 403 Racine St., was the home of Dave's Burger Shanty for many years (from at least the ‘60s to the early ‘90s). Several short-lived restaurants have occupied it since, most recently Mr. Taco/Mrs. Fajitas and Foxxy Chicken. Since May ’18 it has been the base for some food truck.

Description:  A CN local clears Racine St. while working in the former SOO yard at Menasha, WI on 6 Dec. '19. The facility at right is currently home to Alliance Industries, 320 Appleton St., they apply powder coatings and manufacture sand cores. Founded at Waupaca, WI in 1979, they leased this facility in 2005. They later purchased the facility as well as the adjacent one at 313 Appleton St. The facility was home to Menasha Mill Supply Co. from at least 1939 through the 1970s, they primarily processed waste paper. It clearly used to receive rail service, but it does not seem to currently. The former MILW yard was located on the other (south) side of it; the building could be serviced by both railroads simultaneously. The small white building partially visible at left, at 403 Racine St., was the home of Dave's Burger Shanty for many years (from at least the ‘60s thru the ‘80s). Several short-lived restaurants have occupied it since, most recently Mr. Taco/Mrs. Fajitas and Foxxy Chicken. Since May '18, it has been used as a base for some food truck.

CN 3823, GTW 5812, et al.
Title:  CN 3823, GTW 5812, et al.
Description:  A CN through freight and a local meet along Union St. at the former Sherry St. grade crossing at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 23 Apr. '22. Through freight had three locomotives, CN 3823 and NS 4384 pulling, as well as NS 4064 mid-train. Local was headed for Waupaca and had one locomotive, GTW 5812. The historic Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility and the Murer House are partially visible beyond the train. The WC (later SOO) depot stood on the opposite side of Sherry St. from those two buildings. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built. A 1909 map shows the yard still here, a 1936 map depicts both the old and new yards. The Main St. overpass is in the background to the left.

Getting Ready to Work the FOXY Yard
Title:  Getting Ready to Work the FOXY Yard
Description:  Leased FOXY power rest in Appleton yard as L523 pauses on the CN's Fox River Sub planning their moves to interchange cars with the Watco owned shortline. On this rainy may day GTW 5847 (GP38-2) and GTW 5812 (GP38-2) were in charge of L523.

L523 at Shawano Jct.
Title:  L523 at Shawano Jct.
Description:  GTW 5847 (GP38-2) and GTW 5812 (GP38-2) haul L523 north through Shawano Jct. in Fox Crossing, WI. The trains are continuing on the Fox River Sub on the track in the background. The foreground track used to be the CNs Shawano Sub (Branch), but a majority of the line (From Appleton North) is now owned by Watcos FOXY. I am unsure what will become of the small section that parallels the CNs Fox River Sub between here and Appleton.
