North Of The Border Trailing Unit
Title:  North Of The Border Trailing Unit
Description:  The conductor has reboarded the 5302 after doing a roll-by inspection of a westbound freight. Now his train is departing with a north of the border unit as its companion. The train itself was a mix of tank cars and covered hoppers. What symbol was this train?

Silent Bridge
Title:  Silent Bridge
Description:  Up until the mid 2000s, the old Minneapolis, Northfield, and Southern felt the weight of trains of the Twin Cities and Western bringing grain to and from Savage. Now that the Minnesota River MNS swing bridge is listed as "out of service," it is up in the air when the next train will make its weight felt on this veteran bridge over Highway 13 and the Union Pacific (ne-CNW nee-Omaha Road).

CHSX 860
Title:  CHSX 860
Description:  Roster view of this unit, taken at the CHS Grain Terminal, one of the "Ports of Savage." I admit that after trying to photograph it from way across Highway 13 and seeing how deserted things were it being the off-season and a Saturday, I just casually drove in, got out, got this shot, and boogied. Don't try this during the peak season, though: tracks are full of cars here.

"14-3"
Title:  "14-3"
Description:  "14-3" is the height limit on this new bridge built over the new addition to the Highway 13 frontage road in downtown Savage several years ago. When it will feel the weight of its first train is up in the air due to problems with the Minnesota River swing bridge.

"Dan Patch trestle"
Title:  "Dan Patch trestle"
Description:  I nicknamed the Quentin Avenue bridge "Dan Patch trestle" while walking up the road to and from the Savage library during a long sojurn in town back in 2002. The solar-powered (?) stop signs which flash red as cars approach the one-lane underpass were put in after I finally got to get back to the Lake Minnetonka area. (Long story there.)

From Depot To Gift Shop To Eatery
Title:  From Depot To Gift Shop To Eatery
Description:  This is the depot built in 1883 by the Omaha Road in Savage. It later got moved in 1973 to the Murphy's Landing historic village in Shakopee for use as a gift shop before being repatriated to Savage in 2006 for its current use. Missouri Pacific Veterans
Title:  Missouri Pacific Veterans
Description:  According to a website I just visited (http://utahrails.net/all-time/current-index.php) the number series on these units indicate they are former Mo Pac units. At this moment today they are idling by the yard office near the sign warning of remote controlled locomotives. If that is them, they now are 1:1 scale models on a 1:1 scale model railroad!

Just Like Old Times!
Title:  Just Like Old Times!
Description:  While busily documenting and making notes about a future article about a hotel I was stuck in this town back in 2002, it suddenly became just like old times as I got my camera out for a passing UP train just like way back then. In this case it was a super-short westbound freight bound for Valley Park yard seen here charging through the grade crossing at the entrance to Port Cargill.

Humbolt Yard Stuff
Title:  Humbolt Yard Stuff
Description:  Four road units and two ex-Milwaukee switchers were the prizes I bagged on a visit to Humbolt Yard this day. The fact that "bandit" units still can be found in 2011 is one reason why I like the Canadian Pacific better than the Canadian National!

Stopped Near Shoreham
Title:  Stopped Near Shoreham
Description:  A southbound CP freight stis stopped by Shoreham up from University Junction on a clear and pleasantly chilly Saturday afternoon. Wonder why they had to stop? I had no time to see why because I had to return a video game bought at Rosedale Mall. Dig that veteran SD40-2 in the back!

A Sight Soon To Fade
Title:  A Sight Soon To Fade
Description:  Here is a glimpse of the cars on the Ford Hauler as it crosses Davem Road. Note how empty the tracks of the auxiliary yard are by now. Nevertheless, the Ford Hauler will keep running as long as there are Ford Rangers to ship from the plant grounds.

Last Shot
Title:  Last Shot
Description:  Here the Ford Hauler crosses Orrin Avenue right after crossing Otto. This was my last shot as daylight could no longer be coaxed along by the flash setting. All I could was watch and then take notes after it rolled downhill into Fordson Junction and on to Pigs Eye Yard.
