Album Info:Most, if not all, of the photographs in this album were captured in Northeast Wisconsin in the winter of 2021, so they are mostly CN operating on former C&NW, GB&W, MILW, and SOO rails. Once in a while I try to catch ELS and WSOR on former MILW rails too.

CN 0075 MW
Title:  CN 0075 MW
Description:  CN 0075 MW was parked on the passing siding along Harrison St. at the former Monroe St. grade crossing at the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 20 Feb. '21. It was part of the consist of a through freight which was dropping off and picking up cars at the yard. Unfortunately, the sun was hanging out on the wrong side of the tracks.

CN 5419
Title:  CN 5419
Description:  While my attention was focused on the unique MoW cars depicted in the previous photographs, this CN train snuck up behind me and halted along Harrison St. at the former Caroline St. grade crossing at the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 20 Feb. '21. The Main St. overpass can be seen in the background to the left. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here.

Title:  CN 3233
Description:  A CN through freight rests on former SOO rails at the W. Bell St. overpass at Neenah, WI, on 20 Feb. '21. If I had known which unit this was, I would have waited in the hope of getting a better shot of it. A remnant of the former C&NW main line, now relegated to a passing siding, lies in the foreground.

GTW 4930
Title:  GTW 4930
Description:  A CN local crosses Mud Creek via the former SOO timber trestle bridge as it heads northeast at Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016) on 20 Feb. '21. The train is shaking some clumps of snow from the bridge. I was standing in the shadow of the former C&NW bridge, also in use by CN. The longer, center span of the SOO bridge consists of several steel I-beams; the remainder of the bridge is constructed of wood. I didn't see a builder’s plate, but there is a small stencil stating "Painted 1960." Metal walkways and handrails were added when the deck was replaced in '17, or maybe it was '16. Local was headed for Shawano with 6 or 7 cars.

CN 5644 and CN 5435
Title:  CN 5644 and CN 5435
Description:  A CN through freight crosses the Wolf River via the former SOO bridge as it heads northwest at Gills Landing, WI, on 20 Feb. '21. The bridge was built as a swing bridge in 1894. A significant mechanical failure left the pivot inoperable from 2003 until the fall of 2011, when it was converted into a vertical lift bridge. According to bridgehunter.com, it "is likely the only vertical-lift bridge in the world with a center lift tower".

IC 9603
Title:  IC 9603
Description:  A CN local passes the historic Dale feed mill and approaches Wisconsin Rd. (formerly Main St.)/Hwy. 96 as it heads northwest via former SOO rails at Dale, WI, on 20 Feb. '21. Historically Main St. (as listed on CN's signal relay case), some of the street signs have been changed to Wisconsin Rd. (it shows up as Wisconsin Ave. on the satellite map). Hwy. 96 used to be Hwy. 10, until the latter's expansion and relocation ca. '97. The Dale feed mill was built between 1889 and 1908, when it was Northern Grain Co. By ’10 it was the Western Elevator Co., Western Grain Co. in some references. It was the Steffen’s Elevator Co. from ca. ’21 until at least ’68, it was purchased by John H. Steffens and later run by his sons. It was Dale Feed Service from ca. ’73 until at least ’81. It has been home to Earth Sense Energy Systems, Inc., W9715 State Rd. 96, Dale, WI, since ’96.

Description:  A CN local crosses the junction with the former C&NW right-of-way, now the Mountain-Bay State Trail, as it heads northwest via former SOO rails at Shawano, WI, on 27 Feb. '21. The interlocking tower that guarded the junction stood to the right, south of SOO tracks and east of C&NW tracks, until it was torn down circa 1995. I thought the tower stood by the clump of trees to the left, but a review of others' photographs on rrpicturearchives.net as well as some old maps has proven that my recollection of the tower's location was erroneous. There are remnants of a foundation there, but it must have been something else.

Description:  A CN local crosses W. Capitol Dr. and passes a neat, old barn and concrete silo as it heads northwest with 9 cars via former C&NW rails at Town of Grand Chute, Outagamie Co., WI, on 7 Mar. '21. The farmstead dates to at least 1882, but I’m not sure if the barn does. It does not appear to be an active farm. This locomotive would pass this same spot exactly five hours later, when it was headed in the opposite direction.

Several references erroneously state that the building dates to 1887. The original hotel was erected in that year, but it burned down and the current facility was erected in its place. Some references also claim that the building has been called Greenville Station for over 100 years, but that too is an exaggeration.

Description:  A CN local crosses Givens Rd. as it heads northwest with 9 cars via former C&NW rails at Town of Hortonia, Outagamie Co., WI, on 7 Mar. '21. I was standing in Hortonville, the train was in Hortonia. The facility partially visible at right used to be part of the GripTite nail factory, I believe. The facility does not presently benefit from rail service, but it used to. It has been sub-divided and currently houses multiple businesses. I'm not sure if this portion is still used by Honey Bee Ware or not. The business changed hands a while back.

Description:  A CN local passes the station sign and approaches S. Nash St./Hwy. M (originally Oshkosh St.) as it heads southeast with 6 cars via former C&NW rails at Hortonville, WI, on 7 Mar. '21. I believe that the depot stood a little closer to S. Nash St./Hwy. M than the station sign currently does. It is difficult to believe that there used to be five tracks here. To the right stands the historic Peter Olk’s Elevator (a.k.a. Olk’s Elevator) at 136 W. Dewey St. The oldest part of the facility dates to at least 1894, when it was the W. L. Root Grain & Potato Warehouse. A 10,000-bushel elevator was added to the facility in 1908, about the time that Olk acquired it. A couple of other additions have been erected since then. Circa ‘10, Peter Olk was a “dealer in grain, flour, feed, salt, lime and cement.” In ‘34 the facility became the home of Schneider Multifeed (a purveyor of feed for livestock and pets), and operated as such until at least 2006. Black Otter Supply is the facility’s most recent, if not current, occupant (a bird seed store). Another historic facility is partially visible in the background. The Wisconsin Grain and Malt Co. also dates to at least 1894. It was later acquired by the Western Elevator Co. and became the Miller Grain & Fuel Co. in 1909. It was used by the neighboring Schneider Elevator ca. 1968.

GTW 4930
Title:  GTW 4930
Description:  A CN local passes a neat, old barn and concrete silo and crosses W. Capitol Dr. as it heads southeast with 6 cars via former C&NW rails at Town of Grand Chute, Outagamie Co., WI, on 7 Mar. '21. The farmstead dates to at least 1882, but I’m not sure if the barn does. It does not appear to be an active farm. This locomotive passed this same spot exactly five hours earlier, when it was headed in the opposite direction.

WAMX 3894 and WAMX 3895
Title:  WAMX 3894 and WAMX 3895
Description:  A WSOR train momentarily fouls Willow Rd. as it prepares to service Country Visions Co-operative via former C&NW rails at Town of Sheboygan Falls, Sheboygan Co., WI, on 13 Mar. '21. The road is the border between the Town of Sheboygan Falls and the Town of Plymouth, so WAMX 3895 rests in the former and WAMX 3894 rests in the latter.
