SP 3960
Description:
Working the Southern Pacific yard at City of Industry, California, on March 2, 1975, are a pair of early Espee SDs: SD9 3960 and SD7 1430. SD9 3960 is wearing its second roadnumber (originally SP 5487) and paint scheme (it was delivered in "Black Widow"), while SD7 1430 is on its third roadnumber (built as SP 5323, and later renumbered to 2730) and third paint job (delivered in "Tiger Stripe" and later repainted into "Black Widow"). SP 1430 would later be upgraded and renumbered (to SP 1523 in February 1980), eventually sold in December 1998 to Larrys Truck Electric in Niles, OH, who would scrap it. SP 3960 would also be rebuilt and renumbered (to 4419 in November 1976) and later sold through Chrome Crankshaft to Kerr-McGee Corporation (Trona CA), who would chop the nose and add it to the Trona Railways roster as #2001.

AMTK 528
Description:
In 1975, much of Orange County was still somewhat agricultural. A San Diego-bound "San Diegan" has just crossed the Santa Ana River and entered the city of Orange on a typically gloomy April day in 1975. The five car train is being pulled by one of Amtrak's ubiquitous SDP40F diesels (528, built by EMD in June 1973). Within a few short years, the orange groves and eucalyptus tree wind breaks would all be bulldozed in order to make way for more urban sprawl, and the area in this photo is unrecognizable today - This area is all warehouses, factories and businesses, and access to the tracks here is accessable only at a few grade crossings.

Description:
SP SD35 6902 suffers an electrical fire as the train waits in the hole in Soledad Canyon west of Palmdale, CA on July 15, 1973. The crew never noticed the smoke pouring out of the second locomotive, and had to be alerted by the foamer whod stopped to photograph their train. No wonder the railroads hate railfans so much!

ATSF 3900
Description:
In the mid-1970s, Santa Fe rebuilt three Alco RSD15s with EMD components and dubbed them CRSD20 diesels. These were used on the hump at the railroad's massive new yard in Barstow, California, which was completed in February 1976. These engines were mothers to drones (slugs), built from old Alco RSD5s and RSD15s. Seen at Barstow on April 25th, 1976, are Santa Fe CRSD20 3900 (ex-RSD15 9828, nee-828) and CRSD20 3901 (ex-RSD15 9826, nee-826).

CP 2860 - Kern Junction, Bakersfield, CA - 3/29/77
Description:
In early 1977, the former Canadian Pacific “Royal Hudson” owned by tke province of British Columbia made a trip to California to promote tourism in beautiful BC. On March 29th, the Southern Pacific pilot had climbed into the cab of the streamlined 4-6-4 at Bakersfield. Shortly, a clear signal will allow the train to leave Santa Fe rails and, at Kern Junction, and begin its run over the Southern Pacific as the Tehachapi Mountains are crossed. The train will arrive at its final destination, Los Angeles, before sundown.

"Royal Hudson" 2860 is a former Canadian Pacific 4-6-4 owned by the province of British Columbia. In March of 1977, the streamlined engine and its train - which normally operated on the British Columbia Railway out of North Vancouver, BC - headed to California in order to create interest in tourism to the Canadian province. The train is seen here on March 29th heading through Russ, in Soledad Canyon, on its way to Los Angeles. BN RCC108 - West Colton Yard, Bloomington, CA - 6/22/77
Description:
The "flying saucer" lighting pinpoints this as Southern Pacifics West Colton Yard, even though these Radio Control Cars are clearly painted in Burlington Northern colors. In the late 1970s the SP tested several of the BNs remote helper control, with a small batch of BN SD40-2s and RCU/RCC cars working out of southern California. Laying over at West Colton Yard are BN RCC 108 (ex-BN F7B 661, originally Great Northern 448B) and RCU 109 (ex-BN F3B 701, ex-Northern Pacific 6000B, nee-NP 6011B). These units added a nice touch of color to the southern California rail scene at the time.

SP 2640 - Fullerton, CA - 7/18/75
Description:
Southern Pacific SW1500 2640 trundles across Harbor Boulevard on its way east to Anaheim on an overcast July 18, 1975. This line, owned by Union Pacific (but SP had trackage rights) is now gone, and the UP station (just to the left of the trains box car) would eventually be moved to this side of Harbor Boulevard, and across the parallel Santa Fe tracks (barely visible behind the 2640s cab) to become an Old Spaghetti Factory restaurant - a popular railfan hangout in Fullerton!
