Album Info:The history of rail transport in Finland began on January 31st 1862, with the opening of the railway line between Helsinki and Haemeenlinna. Finland, which was a Grand Duchy under Russia in the 19th century, uses 1,524 mm (5 ft) gauge. Electrification of Finland's railways started in the late 1960s, and most main lines are now electrified. The system used is 25 kV 50 Hz AC. The VR Group operates mainly passenger services from Helsinki but also provides cargo services from Russia to the Baltic seaports. The current VR locomotive classification system was taken into use in 1976. In this system locomotives class designation consists of two letters and a serial number. The first (capital) letter signifies the source of power, either S (saehko) for electric or D for diesel. The second (lower case) letter signifies locomotive weight: k (kevyt) for light, axle weight 11 metric tons or less; v (vaeliraskas) for midweight, axle weight 11,1 tons to 15 tons; and r (raskas) for heavy, axle weight 15,1 tons or more. Information by Valtion Rautatiet - Finnish Railways, Wikipedia and others Finnish sources. NEWEST pictures are always put to the beginning of album, older are more or less in ascending typ order.

Sm3 - VR Finnish Railways
Title:  Sm3 - VR Finnish Railways
Description:  The Sm3 has received a lot of bad publicity in Finland for its reliability issues, mostly caused by technical problems with the tilting system and couplers. VR has tried to mitigate the problem by coupling trains only at termini instead of intermediate stations and switching the tilting system off during winter. The trains will go through an extensive maintenance cycle between 2012 and 2014, which will include changes to the couplers and the tilting system in order to make the train more reliable. Also the Swiss and Czech Republic Pendolino suffering a lot of technical problems and are almost famous for their failing of service standards.
