Album Info:One of the more productive ways to get train photos, for me, anyway, is a chase. If I'm lucky, I'll get one going away from home, then catch something else coming back. Most of the time, it works best if I catch a northbound and follow it to either Noel or McElhany near Neosho, though chasing south to Stilwell and back is also a workable plan. Living in Siloam Springs, I can go either way. This album is the result of those chases.

Long ride to chase it down
Title:  Long ride to chase it down
Description:  I heard the horn for a southbound from the house, and got out fairly quickly, but the slowpokes on the way down to Westville sank the chase. The train was on the US 62 crossing in Westville when I got there. I finally caught up down near MP 252 south of Baron, to find this merger mix of CP and KCS units leading a 105 car oil train.

Returning north
Title:  Returning north
Description:  I had hoped to chase the oil train down to Bunch, there are a couple of shots I want to do there, but the sun was now getting low, and I had a northbound to head home with, so I turned my attention to the H train, which we see here on the bridge over Baron Fork Creek, just barely catching the sun.

Knocked down
Title:  Knocked down
Description:  The H train has passed the signal, now red over red as he takes the siding. I quit the chase here-the light was going, and I had to get home-but at least with the end of February, the light stays longer, and I get more of the "back" part of the chase in before its too dark to shoot pictures.

Dark side
Title:  Dark side
Description:  Normally I shoot this from the lit side, which has a good view in a tele shot of the train streteched out into the next curve south of town. This time I decided to go for the nose lit, but dark side of the train. It would be more effective if there wasnt so much clutter, as I could work the station/museum into the photo without a pole in front of it. This does have the advantage of allowing me a quick getaway, as I dont have to let the whole train pass before resuming the chase, though hed meet a southbound at Dorsey, just to the north, and Id get him anyway.

Description:  The coal train is pulling to the top of the grade coming out of the Flint Creek valley, its power working hard as it approaches Davidson Rd. The detector just to the south will tell me it has 124 loaded cars.

Short trip, long wait
Title:  Short trip, long wait
Description:  I heard a horn as we came back from lunch, and took off into town, expecting to chase a northbound. That guess was correct; what I didnt know was there was a southbound coal train holding the main. By the time I got it together, I had missed both trains at Siloam. I didnt want to be out too long, so went to Gentry to get the northbound. I got ahead, and climbed the embankment to the Ark 12 overpass, and waited...and waited...and waited. I figure either he was holding south of town to meet a southbound-KCS does this so not to block crossings-or he was picking up DPUs from the Flint Creek Spur. I was about to give up on the effort after about 30 minutes in 95 degrees, when I heard a horn to the south, and shortly after saw a column of smoke as the train pulled away from the spur, about a mile to the south. Here he is, four original units, and three picked up off the spur, with 115 empty oil cans.

I was right after all
Title:  I was right after all
Description:  I had thought they might be holding back on a meet as one option for the long delay of the northbound oil trains arrival. Turned out I was right on that count as well. A southbound, possibly 262?? rolls down the siding as the oil train runs north on the main.

Title:  Southbound
Description:  The oil train met this southbound merchandiser. I now felt like the standing on a hot bridge was not such a waste of time after all. Power is a now common CP/KCS set.

Front and back
Title:  Front and back
Description:  The head end of the southbound passes the rear of the oil train. The oil trains usually run with power on both ends. For some reason, this one has all four units up front. Hazardous material trains apparently dont need buffers any more, and Ive seen a number of these trains without them this year.

Almost back
Title:  Almost back
Description:  Now that I had spent almost 90 minutes on a 12 mile chase, I was back at Davidson Rd to shoot the southbound reaching the summit of the grade up from Sleepy Hollow. I beat him by about 3 minutes, since he had to take the south Gentry siding switch at 15 MPH. Not much lead, but enough to get set up before he showed.
