Viewing Album: Northeast WI, Spring 2016
By:
T. P. Bruss
Dates:
3/20/2016 - 6/19/2016
Album Info:
Most of the photographs in this album were captured in Northeast Wisconsin in the spring of 2016, so they are mostly CN operating on former C&NW, GB&W, MILW, and SOO rails. Once in a while I try to catch ELS and WSOR on former MILW rails too.

Description:
CN through freight slows to halt along Union St. at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 20 Mar. '16. Train had four locomotives, CN 5639, CN 2155, CN 5752, and OPT 2030. If the information I’ve found is accurate, OPT 2030 was formerly NREX 2030, formerly ICG 2030, formerly UP 778. It is also labeled "Carmeuse Lime & Stone," "Port Inland Operation." Carmeuse has a large earth materials facility and dock at Port Inland, MI, and another facility about 5 miles to the north near Inland and Huntspur, MI.

The guardrail marks the location of the former Sherry St. grade crossing. The WC (later SOO) depot was built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest.

Description:
Some flatcars allow a partial view of some local power resting in front of the yard office at the CN, former SOO, yard at Neenah, WI on 26 Mar. '16. There was another GTW geep parked here, of course it moved out as I walked down the sidewalk to get the perspective I wanted. I think they saw me coming.

CN 8931
Description:
A southbound CN container train passes the depot/yard office as it heads southwest through an unusually empty former C&NW yard at Oshkosh, WI at 1604 hours on 9 Apr. '16. Normally this view of the facility is blocked by the cars in the yard. I've never seen this yard completely empty. I haven’t seen cars spotted here since at least 31 Jan. '16. The taller building partially visible on the right sits at the approximate location of the C&NW's South Oshkosh depot, a smaller, plainer structure than their once ornate Oshkosh depot which still stands less than a mile to the north. Historically, everything south of the Fox River was once known as South Oshkosh. The C&NW South Oshkosh depot was saved from demolition, but its current fate is unknown to me. I have seen post-relocation photographs of it on the internet, but they do not reveal its precise location. Some references state it was moved to downtown Oshkosh, others state it was moved to a park in Oshkosh. If it still survives, I have not found it yet. Train had two locomotives, CN 8961 pulling and CN 8931 pushing.

CN 4704
Description:
CN local crosses the South Channel (Neenah Channel) of the Fox River while it services Neenah Paper via a remnant of the former C&NW mainline at Neenah, WI on 10 Apr. '16. The recently renamed ThedaCare Regional Medical Center-Neenah looms in the background. From its construction in 1909 until 23 Mar. '16, it was named Theda Clark Hospital, in honor of the daughter of a local paper baron (Medical Center eventually replaced Hospital in the name). After ThedaCare acquired most of the local hospitals, the geniuses in charge thought it was too confusing to keep their traditional names, like Theda Clark, Appleton Medical Center, Shawano Hospital/Medical Center, etc. So let’s rename them all ThedaCare Regional Medical Centers. Makes perfect sense, doesn't it?

CN 3058 and CN 2807
Description:
CN through freight approaches the Main St. over pass as it traverses the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 10 Apr. '16. The remnants of the ca. '60s SOO depot's foundation is partially visible to the left of the lead locomotive, some rail sections supported by concrete blocks rest atop the foundation. It was constructed of masonry and replaced the wooden depot that used to stand at Sherry St., about 850 feet to the southeast. The silo toward the left is Eggers Industries, 164 N. Lake St., Neenah, WI, a periodic rail customer. The industry partially visible on the right is Clearwater Paper Corp., 249 N. Lake St., Neenah, WI (physically located in Town of Menasha), a frequent rail customer. Train had three locomotives, CN 3058, CN 2807, and CN 2845.

IC 3137
Description:
CN local approaches the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 17 Apr. '16. The local is passing the corporate headquarters of Plexus and Affinity clinic on Main St. Both are part of the site of the former P. H. Glatfelter Co. paper mill, which stood here for 135 years, the oldest part of the original mill was constructed in 1874. Glatfelter purchased the mill from Bergstrom Paper Co. in 1979. Bergstrom had purchased the mill, originally Winnebago Paper, in 1904. Glatfelter moved the jobs to Ohio in June 2006, the mill stood idle for about two years until it was torn down, demolition was completed in May 2009. The steel columns and beam framing the train are the last significant remnant of the defunct Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant). It supported steam pipes that ran from the energy center to the paper mill. Opened in Jan. '98, it has stood idle since 15 Jun. '13. Demolition is nearly complete, after several delays. A large pile of broken concrete is about all that remains and will soon be removed and recycled. The original ca. 1881 Wisconsin Central (WC) depot stood on the south (right) side of the tracks right about where the locomotive is. I don't know how long the depot stood, but it was converted to a freight house when a new depot was constructed on Sherry St. in 1891. The ca. 1881 depot was built on pilings in the south end of Little Lake Butte des Morts, these tracks were originally on a trestle over the water. All of the earth under and to the left (north) of these rails is landfill, deposited in the south end of the lake by the paper mills starting in the 1950s. That former landfill is now Arrowhead Park. The white building partially visible on the right is Progressive Paper Storage, Inc. (formerly Kimberly-Clark Warehouse), 135 Millview Dr. It does not receive rail service, but it looks like there may have been a spur on the northwest side of the building in the past.

BB while picking up a string of cars from the southwest end of the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on its way back to the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 25 Apr. '16. The local is spanning 3 communities at once in a peculiar spot of the sometimes confusing local borders. This section of the road is the border separating the Town of Grand Chute, Outagamie Co., WI to the north (left) and the Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI to the south (right). The locomotives and the 1st freight car are in the Town of Menasha, the next 3-4 freight cars are in the Town of Grand Chute, and, thanks to an unnatural jog in the border, the remainder of the train, out of frame to the left, is in Appleton, WI.

It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest.

Description:
CN Appleton based crew approaches S. Perkins St. as a Neenah based local passes on the main line while both head northeast through the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 15 May '16. The Neenah crew was slowing to halt on the main line to set out a string of cars before continuing on to service Little Chute and Kaukauna. The Appleton crew has just dropped their train (partially visible on the right) at the far southwestern end of the yard after completing their work in Appleton, Kimberly, and Combined Locks. The Neenah crew will pick up those cars later on their way back to Neenah.

Description:
CN local assembles its train of 34 cars at the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 15 May '16. I believe they were preparing to head toward Manitowoc, WI. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, the owners didn’t want to spend any money to update the plant. It stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished.

Description:
CN local shoves a couple of boxcars across N. Lake St. as it services the Clearwater Paper Corp. mill via former SOO rails at Town of Menasha, WI on 21 May '16. Originally incorporated as Lakeside Paper Co. on 9 Nov. 1910, construction of the mill began in ’11, and paper production commenced on 12 Jun. ‘12. At some point they started to sell a large share of their book paper production to Sears, Roebuck & Co. for their catalogues. The mill was sold and re-incorporated as Lakeview Paper Co. on 9 Aug. ’20. Sears, Roebuck & Co. bought the facility ca. the mid- to late-‘20s. The mill was shut down on 1 Feb. ’29 after a boiler failure and Sears promptly sold it to the Canadian firm of Fraser Paper, Ltd. (which also produced book paper for Sears). Fraser did not hold it long, they sold it to Kimberly-Clark Corp. ca. Mar. ’29, known as the Lakeview Mill. Kimberly-Clark sold the facility to American Tissue Mills ca. Aug. ’96. The mill abruptly shut down on 6 Sep. ’01 due to American Tissue’s significant financial problems. The briefly idled mill was purchased by Cellu Tissue Corp. in ’02 and was renamed Cellu Tissue Corp. - Neenah, commonly shortened to Cellu Tissue - Neenah. Cellu Tissue Corp. was acquired by Clearwater Paper Group in ’10. The mill is a longtime rail customer, a map from 1955 shows 6 spurs to service this paper mill, now there are 2, but only this sees regular use.

Description:
CN container train parallels Hwy. 41 as it speeds northeast via former SOO rails at Snells, WI on 28 May '16. Snells is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. A Post Office was established 4 May 1876, originally called Snell’s Station, sometimes referred to as Snell’s Crossing. This small, rural community once included a depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. Snells was located at Mile 183 on the SOO’s Trevor to Somerset line and Mile 173.1 on the C&NW’s Milwaukee to Marinette line. It does not look like any real remnants of the original community remain. Even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone.
