Viewing Album: Avondale and Waggaman
By:
James Robichaux
Dates:
3/1/2003 - 3/17/2022
Album Info:
Avondale, Louisiana, is the location of a major set of suburban yards just a few miles west of New Orleans. Historically, the Texas & Pacific Railway and the Southern Pacific Railway had side-by-side yards. Today, most of the activity at the yards is done by the Union Pacific Railroad, with the BNSF Railway doing some crew changing and block swapping in a part of the former SP yard. Waggaman is the community just upriver from Avondale, and it is the location of a junction called CTC Live Oak, which was built after the UP-SP merger. West of the junction, the lines stop being parallel; the former T&P and Missouri Pacific Railroad mainline, now UP's Livonia Subdivision, follows the western bank of the Mississippi River through White Castle, Donaldsonville, and Plaquemine to Livonia, while the ex-SP line, now the BNSF Railway's Lafayette Subdivision, goes southwest toward Raceland, then west toward Morgan City and Berwick, and then northwest through New Iberia to Lafayette.

Title:
New Signals At Avondale Garden Road
Description:
This picture shows a pair of recently installed signal stands. The more obvious one is the large cantilever signal at left, hanging over the former Texas & Pacific Railway mainlines; the less-obvious one is at right next to the former Southern Pacific Railway mainline. Barely visible in the distance, left of the closest wooden pole in the foreground, is the yard tower. UP's intermodal yard and ramp are at the right edge of the picture.

Yard Job Parked by The Schoolhouse - Ground-level View
Description:
This appears to be a yard job parked on the Drill Extension track leading into Avondale Yard. It is likely that the cars shown here will be kicked, switched, drilled, etc., into the yard tracks, or this may be an unusually long Morgan City Local train; the sand hopper cars are likely bound for one of three facilities along the Lafayette subdivision (one at Raceland, one at Boeuf, and a third in New Iberia), and the loaded pipe gondolas are likely bound for one of about five pipe yards in the area (one at Fort St. Leon in Plaquemines Parish, one in Marrero, one in Westwego, one in Boeuf, or one in Morgan City), and the large LPG tank cars may be bound for the Discovery Gas Plant in Paradís.
