These likely have been here for over 25 years. BNSF ceased service to Astoria in 1996, and the ROW was eventually purchased by the Astoria Riverfront Trolley, which now operates a short tourist line across town. 8500 GTEL X-26 is on display at Ogdens Union Station. It was one of 30 8500 horsepower Gas turbines UP owned, and one of 2 that has been preserved. UP 18, the other preserved GTEL, is at Union, Illinois. Both the 26 and 18 were stored in Cheyenne, Wyoming in the late 60s, and were the last two turbines retired by UP. The remaining 8500 GTELs, all the Veranda and Standard 4500 GTELs, and oddballs such as the coal turbine, steam turbines, and the double-ended UP 50 were all scrapped. |

A truck carrying a very famous 0-6-0 makes a stop at Siskiyou Summit to check the brakes. Siskiyou Summit is the highest point on Interstate 5 at 4,310 feet, and has a 6% downhill grade into northern California, so truck drivers will often stop here at the pullout to rest and inspect their vehicles. The truck will make the hill without need of the runaway truck ramps, and Thomas will soon be operating at the Santa Cruz and Big Trees railroad in Felton, California in 10 days. |
