SP (T&NO) Train No. 12
Title: SP (T&NO) Train No. 12
Description: Southern Pacific (Texas & New Orleans) train No. 12 – the NEW ORLEANS LIMITED – was boarding the carfloat MASTODON at Avondale, Louisiana for a ride across the Mississippi River and a connection with the Illinois Central. The train was about 12 miles from its destination at Union Station in New Orleans. No. 12 was an overnight train from Houston and included sleeping cars from Minneapolis (via Rock Island’s MID-CONTINENT SPECIAL), Houston and Lake Charles. This was one of 12 passenger trains which crossed the river here each day, but the ferry was discontinued in December 1935, when the Huey P. Long Bridge opened. The locomotive was P-6 class 4-6-2 built by Alco-Brooks in 1913 as the 926; it was renumbered 616 in 1923 and was sold for scrap at Houston in 1953. (date unknown)

SP No. 1
Title: SP No. 1
Description: The high, midday summer sun made for poor lighting, but that didn't stop Joe Wilhelm from shooting the westbound SUNSET in New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. Train No. 1 was on track 12, awaiting its 12:01 PM departure, with E9A 6046, E7B 5909 and six cars: an unidentified deadhead, a baggage car, three coaches, and an AUTOMAT food service car. The 6046 was the first of the Espee's nine E9A units and was traded-in to EMD in February 1970, while the 5909 was the last of the railroad's 10 E7B's and was sent back to EMD in October 1968. A year after this photo, tracks 7-12 would be shortened by about 600 feet so that a bus parking area could be built here, and then scenes like this would no longer be possible. (approximate day)

SP NW2R 1332
Title: SP NW2R 1332
Description: Southern Pacific NW2R 1332 was parked at the edge of the French Quarter in New Orleans, at the corner of Conti Street (off to the right) and Clay Street (behind the photographer). The SP kept one or more locomotives here for many years, to switch several miles of isolated trackage along the east bank of the Mississippi River. As traffic in this area declined, the SP turned over its few remaining customers to the New Orleans Public Belt around 1980.

Southern No. 194
Title: Southern No. 194
Description: The locomotives on Southern Railway No. 194, running today as Extra SP 6665 North, were stopped on the Gentilly Boulevard (U.S. 90) underpass as the train prepared to head out of New Orleans. This was the run-through train from Houston to Birmingham via the SP-SOU, and the train was stopped while crews changing on SP caboose 4402 back at Oliver Junction. The motive power was GP35 6665, U25B's 6735 and 6730, and GP35 6659; and this was the last time I photographed SP U25B's as most of them were withdrawn from service by the end of the year.

Description: Espee RSD12 2967 and C630 3143 were on a short transfer run en route from the railroad's tiny Three Oaks Yard in Chalmette to its big yard at Avondale. Three Oaks Yard served the American Sugar Company's Chalmette Refinery, and this is reflected in the train's consist; the first car is a Domino Sugar tank car and most of the cars are Airslide sugar hoppers. The train is running over the Southern Railway's BACK BELT at Labarre Road.

SP caboose 661
Title: SP caboose 661
Description: At 7:20 P.M. on a Thursday evening Espee caboose 661 was bringing up the rear of Job 209. This transfer run from the railroad's Avondale Yard to the Southern Railway's Oliver Yard was on the Southern's BACK BELT at East City Junction. East City Tower, visible in the distance on the left, had been closed and boarded up for about three years. The track on the other side of the caboose is the New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal EASTERN CONNECTION, and the signal protects the NOUPT-SOU switch. The freight train was getting under way after waiting for the southbound SOUTHERN CRESCENT to enter the NOUPT track. Job 209 had three 6-axle Alcos -- C630 3146, RSD12 2963, C630 3143 -- and 62 cars.

Westbound SUNSET
Title: Westbound SUNSET
Description: Cruising along at 70 MPH, SDP40F's 551 and 557 were powering the westbound SUNSET LIMITED passed the "temporary" train order office at Raceland Junction, as the operator gave the train a roll-by inspection. Steam generator car 1918 was tucked in behind the locomotives, which was very unusual. This "temporary" office was placed here soon after a freight train derailment wrecked the previous depot on 10 June 1967 and it remained here for almost 18 years, until the introduction of Direct Traffic Control (DTC) on 18 February 1985 eliminated the need for any train order offices along the SUNSET ROUTE between New Orleans and El Paso.

Description: We're facing west on the Espee main line at milepost 64.5. The covered shed on the left was used to transfer fish meal from a plant at Bayou Ramos -- about 10 miles west of here -- from trucks into boxcars and covered hoppers. The siding was worked by train No. 54, the Morgan City-Avondale Local. Today, the shed is gone and the track belongs to the BNSF.

SP Transfer Run
Title: SP Transfer Run
Description: At 6:15 on a midsummer evening, the engineer on Southern Pacific MP15AC 2704 was easing back to pick up his caboose - Cotton Belt 60 - in the New Orleans Public Belt's COTTON WAREHOUSE YARD. The caboose was still coupled to the 19-car transfer run he had just brought over from his railroad's AVONDALE YARD, at the west end of the HUEY P. LONG BRIDGE; and he was now coupling up so he could return home with this 12-car train. The two tracks on the left were the Illinois Central Gulf's north- and southbound main lines; while the structure on the left was the PUBLIC GRAIN ELEVATOR, facing the Mississippi River. Notice the stored NOPB box cars on the right and in the left background.

SSW train BEASK
Title: SSW train BEASK
Description: Cotton Belt train BEASK -- on its way from Beaumont to the Alton & Southern at East St. Louis -- was tied down in Cart siding, about three miles north of Bossier City, Louisiana. The 'K' suffix indicated that the cargo included hazardous material. The train was going to be here for a while, as there was no crew and it had been opened for a grade crossing a few cars back. Fortunately, someone was sweeping out the cab, so I was able to obtain the train's identity! The three GE's were B30-7's 7868, 7820 and 7848. That's the Red River levee to the right of the 8294's snow plow.

SP Train AVHOM
Title: SP Train AVHOM
Description: The Southern Pacific’s AVHOM (Avondale to Houston Manifest) was leaning into the curve at Raceland Junction, Louisiana with EIGHT locomotives: SSW GP40-2 7632, SD40T-2 8569, GP40-2 7623, NS SD60 6629, NS SD50S 6504, and GP40-2’s 7645, 7661 and 7633. It was common for the SP to put two or three sets of power on this train, because there were more eastbound trains than westbound, and doing this got the extra power back to Houston.
