RENFE 276-056-3 |

It was very early in the AM, and three friends and I had just rode all the way from Paris when we detrained in Portbou to switch from our SNCF train to a RENFE one for the ride to Barcelona. The yard around the station was fantastic for this rail buff. This Alstom Class 276 motor was moving around in the crisp morning light. |

A passenger train from the south with a pair of freight cars on the head end, pulls out of Port Bou at the French/Spanish border. The Spanish trains are at a wider gauge, (Iberic Gauge) so when travelling into Spain from France, one is forced to change trains here. Spanish trains are on the right and French trains are out of frame to the left. |

SNCF 22312 coming west |
Description: |
A rake of DEV stock dating from the 40s/50s is in the command of BB 22312 a BB-22200 class "Nez Casse" (Broken Nose). Due to the age of the cars, this might be dated summer service, a 'train supplmentaire' (extra) or a "doublement" (second section), although the DEVs did still see some fast train service on this line at the time. The DEVs were deeveloped in 1938 by Division dEtudes de Voitures, but weren't actually built until 1946 due to WWII. |

This was shot in one of those storms that got a little scary. I remember wondering if we would be okay as this Brugeoise-Nivelles Series 23 pulled in to take us back to Grussels. Series 23 motors were built from 1955 to 1957 and are generally assigned to freight, although passenger use is not uncommon. This is the original green livary that these units were'delivered in. The first two cars are DB Deutsche Bundesbahn (German Federal Railways - West Germany) and the orange cars are SNCB (Belgian State Railway) Eurofima cars. |

NYSW 120 takes Staten Island Railway RV1 east. |
Description: |
SW9 120 was a former C&O unit, picked up by the NYSW when they took over SIRY service. B&O had let it go in April 1985 when they were cut off from their connection by Conrail. Suzy-Q ran the service until about 1991. NYSW #120 was delivered to the C&O 1952/53 and had friction bearing trucks that restricted it to 25 mph. It is now the American Motive Power Inc (AMPI) shop switcher in Dansville NY. |

ICG 9616 passes the depot |
Description: |
Shot from west of the tracks on a RR owned road at MP208.9. The train is coming from Freeman Coal Crown III mine west of Farmersville, IL which opened in 1981 (about 10 miles south). The train is northbound with three ICG GP38-2s and one GM&O GP38-2 and a string of bathtub gons. This track was originally the Jacksonville Southeastern railroad. In 1899 the Illinois Central bought the railroad for the Madison Coal Corp. mine #6 in Divernon (it produced the most coal in the state between 1900 and 1930, it closed in 1925!). |

UP 6085 AT LAUPT 50th |
Description: |
First time a railfan sees a new locomotive model is always fun... this photograph was my first of two types, my first SD60M and my first Dash 8-40B. It was taken at LAUPT's 50th Anniversary while everyone was looking at the covered wagons and steam engines. These two units were futher down the platform -- a brand new SD60M (UP 6085 - EMD 1/89) and a brand new Dash 8-40B (ATSF 7437 - GE 4/89). I believe that 6085 was the first production SD60M ever. |

Wearing a badly faded version of Amtrak's silver and black switcher scheme, CF7 #598 shunts amid the festivities of the LAUPT 50th. This engine began life as Santa Fe F7(A) #211C in 9/49. It was rebuilt into CF7 #2595 in 11/72, and has the rounded roof line of early CF7s that kept that small piece of their F bodies. Amtrak received it in a complicated trade of CF7s and SWs for SDP40Fs in 9/84. |
