Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-6-0 Class H-1 35 presumably on the Erie at Paterson, New Jersey, sometime in 1891, photographer unknown, Chuck Zeiler collection. This locomotive was built by the Rogers Locomotive & Machine Works of Paterson, New Jersey in December 1891 (c/n 4624) as a Mogul type for the CB&Q. An interesting note about the Rogers Works (later, a subsidiary of Alco). The Works did not have a direct rail connection. The nearest railroad was the Erie, about a mile from the factory. The finished locomotives were hauled through the city of Paterson first on temporary tracks laid in the streets and pulled by teams of as many as 20 horses. Later, when streetcars were operating in Paterson, heavy flatcars were used, again using "horsepower". During 1898 the CB&Q adopted a locomotive classification system, this locomotive became a class H-1, one of 116 H-1's from various builders and CB&Q subsidiary railroads. During 1904, the CB&Q adopted a numbering system for locomotives, this locomotive became 1089. It was retired in May 1927.

Bassett, Chuck Zeiler collection. According to the book, Steam Locomotives Of The Burlington Route, by Bernard G. Corbin and Richard F. Kerka, this locomotive was built by CB&Q's Aurora Shops in 1890 as Hannibal and St. Joseph Railroad 66, later renumbered H&StJ 666, and renumbered in 1904 into the CB&Q system as CB&Q 359. It was rebuilt in Denver in June 1932 for exhibition at the Century Of Progress (held in Chicago, Illinois during 1933-34) as Burlington & Missouri River Railroad 35. The following is from Hol Wagner, explaining the number 119 on the front of the smokebox:

It was used in the pageant (at the NY Fair during 1939-40) to represent Union Pacific No. 119 at the joining of the rails of the first transcontinental railroad at Promontory Summit, Utah, on May 10, 1869. And BTW, the 35 was backdated to represent B&MR for the 50th anniversary celebration of the Burlfngton's arrival at Denver in May 1882. It carried B&MR lettering for that, but by the next year when it went to Chicago's Century of Progress Exhibition it had been relettered CB&Q.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 0-4-0 176 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, April 1871, photo by Baldwin Locomotive Works, Chuck Zeiler collection. This locomotive would have been classed E-1 but was retired before the Burlington implemented the locomotive classification system in 1898. The following is from the book, "Steam Locomotives of the Burlington Route", by Bernard C. Corbin and William F. Kerka: The first locomotives purchased directly by the Burlington System from the Baldwin Locomotive Works were the two 0-4-0 types completed in April 1871 and numbered 176 and 177. The boilers had copper fireboxes and iron tubes, and were of the wagon-top type. The water injection system consisted of two crosshead-driven pumps and one steam-fed injector. Stephenson valve-gear motion was used. The tenders were of the typical eight-wheeled type with straight tank tops and a capacity for 1,600 gallons of water. In appearance the locomotives were very similar to engine number 202, an 0-4-0 built at the CB&Q shops in 1877. The early Baldwins, however, were elaborately painted and finished with brass cylinder casings, steam chests, and domes. Polished brass jacket bands also encircled the boiler. Engines 176 and 177 had 16"X22" cylinders, drivers of 49" diameter, and each had a total engine weight of 56,000 pounds.

This ten wheeler was built by the Rogers Locomotive & Machine Works of Paterson, New Jersey, completed in May 1892 as B&MR 294. During 1898, the Burlington System created a classification system for its locomotives, and this one became a class K-1, with no change in the number. During 1904, the Burlington consolidated the locomotive numbering system, and 294 became CB&Q 626. It was retired in December 1931.

Description:  Burlington & Missouri River 2-6-2 Class R-2 368 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, sometime in 1901, photo by H. Tryon, Chuck Zeiler collection. Built by Baldwin in 1901 for the B&MR as R2 Comp. (Compound) 368 (c/n 18956), this Prairie type was equipped with a rigid trailing truck. This locomotive became CB&Q 1757 after the Burlington's systemwide renumbering during 1904. Sometime between 1918 and 1925, the R-2's were rebuilt into class G-8 0-6-0 switchers, retaining their R-2 road numbers. This particular locomotive was rebuilt during 1920 and retired in December 1935. During rebuilding, the Belpaire firebox was replaced with a conventional radial-stay design, the drivers were replaced with 52" diameter wheels, the boiler tubes were shortened and the front tube sheet was replaced, the pilot and trailing trucks were removed and the engine frame was rebuilt, the spring rigging was reworked, the driver brake rigging was replaced, another sand dome was added, a cast front pilot beam was added, and the cab deck was rebuilt. The driving wheel base was not changed, but the tender was altered for switching service. The following is from the book, "Steam Locomotives of the Burlington Route", by Bernard G. Corbin and Richard F. Kerka: With the satisfying operation of the Class R-1 Prairies, it was only natural that a larger engine of the same type, to handle heavier train loads, should be developed. The Class R-2 locomotive was the result. Fifty engines of this class were built by Baldwin in 1901, and an additional ten were completed at the West Burlington shops during the same year. Six of the Baldwin-built locomotives were Vauclain compounds, having cylinders of 16" and 27"X24". The remaining R-2 engines were single-expansion types, and had cylinder dimensions of 20"X24". As on the R-1 class, piston valves placed above the cylinders and actuated by Stephenson link motion controlled steam flow. Straight boilers with Belpaire fireboxes were used on both the compounds and the single-expansion engines. A longer tube length and a greater number of tubes increased the heating surface to 2,888 square feet, compared to 2,076 square feet for the R-1 engines. The design of the main frame, running gear, spring rigging, trailing truck suspension, and driving wheel diameter, 64", was the same as the R-1 engines. With a total engine weight of 170,000 pounds and a boiler pressure of 200 psi, the R-2 types developed a tractive force of 25,500 pounds.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-4-0 Class A-2 440 at Aurora, Illinois on an unknown day in October 1940 ( 18, 19, or 20 ), photographer unknown. The following is excerpted from Burlington Route Historical Society Bulletin 45, entitled "Modern Americans", edited by Hol Wagner:

Number 440 was built by Hinckley Locomotive Works in December 1883 ( c/n 1657 ) as CB&Q 445, becoming Burlington & Missouri River Railroad number 156 in 1886. In 1904 it was renumbered to CB&Q Class A-2 324. In July 1916 it was rebuilt at Havelock and renumbered 440. In July 1926, it was sold for $3,000.00 to Pete Hedgpeth as Rock Port Langdon & Northern 440 and fitted with a slopeback tender from a Kansas City Terminal switcher. In 1940, the Burlington celebrated their 90th Anniversary. As it happened, Number 35 ( Burlington's exhibition 4-4-0 ) was at the New York World's Fair, which the Q did not wish to disturb. So the 440 was borrowed from the RPL&N, fitted with a diamond stack and long cow catcher at the Saint Joseph, Missouri shops, and a rectangular tender from a retired A-2 ( the original had rusted out ), and sent on tour of Lines East locations as B&MR 156 ( notably, Lincoln and Council Bluffs ), but for the appearance at Aurora it was repainted to CB&Q 440. When it exhibition duties were finished, the 440 was returned to the RPL&N and reunited with the slopeback tender. The 440 made its last trip on the RPL&N on November 11, 1945 after that road suffered two track washouts. The assets of the RPL&N were sold off, and the 440 was scrapped in the summer of 1953.

Built as a 2-8-0 Consolidation Type in the summer of 1884 (c/n 7337) renumbered 1632 in 1904, rebuilt into a class G-4-A 0-6-0 sometime before 1910, renumbered to 1453, retired November, 1928. The following is from the book, "Steam Locomotives of the Burlington Route", by Bernard G. Corbin and William F. Kerka: In the summer of 1884 the Baldwin Locomotive Works completed ten 2-8-0 types, numbers 449-458, similar to their earlier models, but built in accordance with plans and specifications furnished by the railroad company. The boiler of this design was 56" diameter and of the straight-top type. Steel plate was used throughout, including the firebox which was radial stayed. The earlier Consolidations had short main rods connected to the second pair of drivers, but these latest engines had longer rods coupled to the third pair. Because the firebox was also built between the third and fourth pair of driving wheels, it was necessary to locate the eccentrics on the second axle. The main frames were forged steel with welded braces. The connecting rods and crank pins were also of forged steel. Westinghouse brake equipment was applied on driving and tender wheels. The tender capacity was 3,000 gallons and the feedwater system employed two injectors. The cylinder dimensions were the same as the earlier types (20"X24"), but the driving-wheel diameter was increased to 52".

Builders photos were generally done with 8X10 view cameras, producing an eight inch by ten inch negative which could be retouched by hand to produce an almost flawless image. When printiing, the print was contact printed with the negative, that is, the negative and print paper touched each other and were pressed between a board and a piece of glass, then exposed to light. As a result, the print yielded exceptional detail, as seen here. The detail of the builders plate can be read, even off a photograph of the entire locomotive.

Description:  Northwestern Steel & Wire 0-6-0 number 4 at Sterling, Illinois on November 11, 1958, Kodachrome by unknown photographer, Chuck Zeiler collection. This locomotive was built in 1919 by the Cooke Works of the American Locomotive Company (Alco) for the CB&Q (c/n 61384). It was one of ten USRA design 0-6-0's that Alco delivered to the Burlington, numbered 500-509, calssed G-5. All lasted into 1953-1954, this one was sold for scrap to Northwestern Steel and Wire (NSW) in December 1954. However, NSW found a few of the Burlington's 0-6-0 serviceable, and put them to work shuffling scrapped steam locomotives from the scrap yard to the furnaces, turning locomotives into wire. This one, former CB&Q 504, became NSW 4 by the simple expedient of painting out the 50, leaving the number 4. One of the products of NSW was nails, and the unofficial slogan of NSW (at least among railfans) was that there was a steam locomotive in every box of NSW nails. The CB&Q 0-6-0's lasted in this service until about 1959, when the GTW sold their 0-8-0's for scrap to NSW, and the 0-8-0's shuffled the 0-6-0's to the furnaces.

Description:  Northwestern Steel and Wire Class G-5 6 at Sterling, Illinois on November 11, 1958, Kodachrome by unknown photographer, Chuck Zeiler collection. Built in 1919 by the Cooke Works of the American Locomotive Company (Alco) as CB&Q class G-5 506, it was one of ten USRA design 0-6-0's (CB&Q road #'s 500-509) allotted to the Burlington during World War 1. All ten lasted into 1953-1954 when they were sold for scrap to Northwestern Steel and Wire (NSW) located in Sterling, Illinois. A few were in good enough shape that NSW put them to work hauling cut up steam locomotives from the scrap yard to the furnaces, this one, former CB&Q 506, became NSW 6 by painting out the 50. Once melted, the locomotives became wire products, and in some cases the wire products became nails. Among the railfans, it was said that there was a steam locomotive in every box of NSW nails. Eventually the Q 0-6-0's were in turn cut up and hauled to the furnaces by GTW 0-8-0's which were sold for scrap to NSW.

This locomotive was completed by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in November 1920 (c/n 53983), one of 15 copies of the USRA design. The CB&Q had received ten USRA 0-6-0's from the Cooke Works of the American Locomotive Company (Alco) during 1919, and went to Baldwin for 15 additional copies, modified to CB&Q specifications. The modifications included (but not limited to) the omission of the superheater, CB&Q style switcher tender, CB&Q headlights, smaller domes. The plate on the cylinder reads: 21 G5A 28 PHILADELPHIA NOV - 1920. My guess is that the numbers 21 and 28 are the bore and stroke of the cylinders, which is consistent with USRA design.

The first 10 (class G-5, numbers 500 - 509) were built by the Cooke Works of the American Locomotive Company (Alco) in 1919, and an additional 15 (class G-5-A, numbers 510 - 524) were built by Baldwin in 1921. The difference between the G-5 and the G-5-A design was the omission of the steam superheater on the Baldwin built locomotives. Both classes were built to the standard USRA design, and very little was done to change them over their lives. Baker valve gear and cross-compound air compressors were standard on all the Burlington's USRA 0-6-0's. All were retired and scrapped between 1953 and 1955 except for this one, which was sold to the French Lick Hotel in December 1957.

Bassett, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 537 was built by Baldwin in April 1896 as Deadwood Central 5 (c/n 14792), renumbered to Burlington & Missouri River 496 in 1901, becoming CB&Q 537 in 1906. In March 1930, the DC was abandon, and the 537 was converted from oil to coal at the Denver Shops (it had been built as a coal-burner, but was converted to burn oil in 1910) and leased to the Colorado & Southern for use on the South Park lines until that line was abandon in April 1937. The tender was used by the scrapper as a water supply for the camp cars assigned in tearing up the South Park. It was reunited with the locomotive on temporary tracks at Denver pending a decision on the locomotive to attend the New York World's Fair, but C&S 9 went instead. The locomotive was stored, then shipped (locomotive and tender on separate flat cars) to the Q's Eola, Illinois Reclamation Plant and scrapped on August 26, 1939.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-4-0 Class A-6 550 at Paterson, New Jersey sometime in April 1893, photo by Rogers Locomotive & Machine Works, Chuck Zeiler collection. The Burlington Route System had a few hundred 4-4-0 locomotive types, but only one built by Rogers. This one was completed in April 1893, delivered as a class M, and was displayed at the Columbian Exposition in Chicago that same year. By 1898 it was renumbered to 1550, re-classed as an A-6, and regularly assigned to mail trains. In 1904, the Burlington consolidated its locomotive numbering system, this one became 472. In 1916 this locomotive was again renumbered, this time becoming 193. It was retired in December 1922.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 0-6-0 Class G-10 565 I believe in Lincoln, Nebraska, sometime in 1956, negative by Dick Rumbolz, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 565 was built by Baldwin in 1904 as 2-6-2 Prairie CB&Q class R-4 number 1908 (c/n 24466), retired in July 1929 and rebuilt into a class G-10 0-6-0 and renumbered 565. A total of 35 R-4's (out of the original 40) were converted to 0-6-0's and given road numbers 560-594. Some of these lasted into the 1950's. This one retained the inboard piston valves of the R-4 when rebuilt, although 14 R-4's received new cylinders and Walschaerts valve gear during 1925.
