Covered hoppers on the Owego & Harford
Title:  Covered hoppers on the Owego & Harford
Description:  (1 of 5) As I was driving along Rt. 221 I could see a whole lotta hoppers here at the north end of the Owego & Harford system. Photo is taken from the intersection of routes 221 and 220 looking south-west. I'm guessing the cars were here for storage. At this point in time I did'nt know that they were there switching cars around.

Sparks are a flyin'
Title:  Sparks are a flyin'
Description:  (3 of 5) From the grade crossing at Rt. 200 and north to the gas facility (now known as Enterprise Products) where they were switching cars, it's about a half mile stretch. After waiting nearly 2 hours, they made it to this point which is about 200-300 feet north of the grade crossing at Rt. 200. I guess part of the reason it took them so long to get here was that they were having trouble getting traction. Yes, those are real sparks! The wheels were slipping; I don't know if the locomotive was malfunctioning, or whether the consist was too heavy for the engine. My estimate is that there were 40 to 60 cars in the consist. Update: I learned today (Feb. 8, 2012) that indeed the consist was too heavy for one engine. They had to run another one up from Owego to finish the job. They had to move some cars out of the way in order to get to some empties that were ordered back to Chicago.

OHRY 2211
Title:  OHRY 2211
Description:  (4 of 5) This is as far as they got before I had to leave at 14:00 hours. The dirt drive parallel to the tracks leads to a little park there in Harford Mills. I did manage to get the reporting information on the first three cars.

O & H 2211
Title:  O & H 2211
Description:  (5 of 5) The only halfway decent head-end shot I could get today. Under the number 2211 are the letters LS; I believe this is evidence of the 2211's Luzerne & Susquehanna heritage.

Owego & Harford 2211 and 2302
Title:  Owego & Harford 2211 and 2302
Description:  I learned today that some of the hoppers that have been here at the end of the line in Harford Mills are full of sand, and the others are simply here for storage. The sand is from Texas and is being used for "fracking" in nearby Pennsylvania. Usually only one engine can handle the job at this location, but considering the weight of loaded sand hoppers, two engines were needed today.
