C&TS 19, close-up view
Title:  C&TS 19, close-up view
Description:  C&TS 19, a GE center-cab unit, waits for its next assignment in the Chama, NM yards. Look at the rather large "GE" emblem on the cab between the two louvres.

C&TS cabooses 0306 and 0503
Title:  C&TS cabooses 0306 and 0503
Description:  C&TS cabooses 0306 and 0503 stand by themselves in the C&TS yards in Chama, NM on 7-03-1987. I don't know why 0306 has a fresh/er coat of paint than 0503 nor why they're in two different number series.

C&TS 0503, looking toward cupola
Title:  C&TS 0503, looking toward cupola
Description:  We're looking at the non-cupola end of C&TS caboose 0503, in the C&TS yards in Chama, NM on 7-03-1987. The car has a closed-off front windowm a metal ladder, and a slightly slanted smokejack near the cupola. The car's paint appears to be faded, at least somewhat, but the white lettering is still crisp and clear. I can't tell from this angle if the handrails are bare metal, or painted white, or some other color.

C&TS 248, partly open-air excursion car
Title:  C&TS 248, partly open-air excursion car
Description:  C&TS 248 apparently started life as a boxcar but has been re-worked into an open-air excursion car. I'm not sure what the crewmen are doing. Chama, NM: 7-03-1987.

Title:  C&TS 250, partly open-air excursion car

C&TS 1284
Title:  C&TS 1284
Description:  C&TS 1284 looks like it started as either a flatcar that had sides added, or a wood-sided gondola car. Note the arch-bar trucks, and the truss rods along with the stakes on each side. The car's third digit may not be an 8 so please let me know if I made a mistake. Chama, NM: 7-03-1987.

Three different cars
Title:  Three different cars
Description:  A black stock car, still lettered for D&RGW; a red D&RGW boxcar, and a green passenger car lettered for the C&TS stand in the C&TS yard in Chama, NM on 7-03-1987. K-class 2-8-2 482 was parked on a siding behind these cars. The skyline, looking north towards Colorado, was and is absolutely breathtaking!

D&RGW 482, fireman's side
Title:  D&RGW 482, fireman's side
Description:  The other railfan and I were both brooding, I think, as we saw the fireman's side of D&RGW 482, a narrow-gauge 2-8-2, in what I think was a backlot of the Chama, NM yard. I was fearing the worst in July 1987, but other railfans have told me that this engine has been restored to operational status!

D&RGW 482, rear of cab
Title:  D&RGW 482, rear of cab
Description:  This view shows the rear of the cab of D&RGW 482, which was in rather poor condition at the time. Notice that a lot of the parts, including gauges, are nowhere in sight. This was the condition in July 1987 but I understand this engine has been restored to operating condition.

D&RGW 487, arriving in Chama
Title:  D&RGW 487, arriving in Chama
Description:  D&RGW 487, a narrow-gauge 2-8-2, leads a train into the Chama, NM yards on 7-03-1987. Note that there isn't much visible smoke--proof of a good fireman, keeping the fire burning properly.

Title:  D&RGW 5706, 3669, and other items
Description:  D&RGW 5706, a black stock car, and 3669, a red wooden boxcar, are coupled to a green passenger car. Steam engine 482 rests in the background. This view looks north-northwest and it's a sight I never get tired of looking at!

Young explorers?
Title:  Young explorers?
Description:  The little girl on the right and the boy with his arms folded are my two oldest children! Apparently they didn't like looking at the setting or afternoon sun when Dad snapped this picture! Or, perhaps, it was hotter than we thought, standing on that butterfly snowplow. FWIW, I don't know who the young man is in the red outfit. I'm glad he was a friend to my children that day.

Looking west from the depot
Title:  Looking west from the depot
Description:  This could be a scene from just about anywhere at any time. As it was, I had already taken some pictures of the inbound train and snapped this one as we were getting ready to leave. One can see the coaling tower, water tank, and one of the rotary snowplows ("O Y", I think). This was a great day of railfanning for me, but I've never been back since to Chama.

CTS 248 and 250, coupled together
Title:  CTS 248 and 250, coupled together
Description:  This is just a close-up shot of cars 248 and 250 showing the overhanging roofwalk, the offset (opposite sides) vertically mounted brake wheels, and the safety chains between the cars. I hadn't seen that very often. Another rotary snowplow is parked behind these two cars but I don't remember which one it was.
