This sleek and powerful 4-8-4 Northern (sometimes called Golden State by SP fans) type steam locomotive was built by Lima in March of 1942 (serial #7853, class GS-4). The loco was a beautiful lead unit for SP passenger trains. Unfortunately it only served SP for 17 years before being "vacated" (retired) in September of 1958 at the Sacramento Shops and then sadly sold for scrap in March of 1959. Specs - 80" dirvers,impressive 300 psi boiler pressure, 25.5x32" cylinders, engine wt of 475,000 lb and tractive effort of 64,800 with a booster adding 13,200 lb to the t.f. This is an Elroy Giffin photo taken during a fan trip. |

Here is another view of SP 4-8-4 4455 on a fan trip taken by rail fan Elroy Giffin. This sleek and powerful 4-8-4 Northern (sometimes called Golden State by SP fans) type steam locomotive was built by Lima in March of 1942 (serial #7853, class GS-4). The loco was a beautiful lead unit for SP passenger trains.
