Description: |
Good looking 4-6-0 ten wheeler built by Burnham, Wms & Co (Baldwin predecessor) in December of 1907. Since the work numbers were not assigned in order, the serial number is unknown for this loco. The 1400s were never converted to oil burning, although their boilers were superheated by the Frisco Shops in the 1920's. The class was "dismissed from service" between March 1950 and November 1951. SLSF 4-6-0 #1404 - St Louis-San Francisco (Frisco) |
Description: |
A fading original photo of the 1907 Burnham, Wms & Co built ten wheeler. According to www.steamlocomotives.com, "Very#few engines were delivered with this particular combination of bore and stroke. Few Ten-wheelers had cylinders this big in any case, yet their 13" piston valves actuated by the still-rare Walschaert's gear seem well-sized to keep up with demand. The 1400s were never converted to oil burning, although their boilers were superheated" Unknown photographer |

SLSF 4-6-0 #1406 - St Louis-San Francisco (Frisco) |
Description: |
This is an unusual photo with several discrepancies. It appears to be in a storage/scrap line but the loco was still working in 1939. Second, the "Vanderbilt" tender was rarer on SLSF locos and suggests possibly that it was an oil burner but several sources state that this class was not an oil burner. Nevertheless, the loco was built by Burnham, Wms &Co in December of 1907 and after 40+ years was "dismissed from service" between March 1950 and November 1951. No photographer was listed for the photo. |

AT&SF 4-6-0 2438 |
Description: |
AT&SF 4-6-0 2438 at Claremont, California on an unknown day in December 1976, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This was a narrow gauge outside frame locomotive, not likely originally AT&SF. The web site steamlocomotive.com places this locomotive in Keizer Station Mall, Salem, OR, and indicated it was originally Ferrocarril Coahuila-Zacatecas No. 6, built by Baldwin in May 1904 (c/n 24252) as a Pacific-type (4-6-2). In 1965 it was sold to Early West Railways, Inc. at La Verne, CA, for a railroad theme park which did not succeed. This locomotive was moved to a railroad theme restaurant (the location pictured here) in Claremont, which did not succeed. In 1981 it was donated to the City of Claremont, CA, who moved it to College Park, until the asbestos scare, when the city put it up for sale. It passed through a couple of owners (one of whom displayed it in Paris, CA) before ending up in Salem, Oregon. |
