Description:  SBD GP38-2 4069 at Union Point, Georgia on February 25, 1983, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This was the power for Train #108, the last mixed train on a Class One in the US. I was a passenger (the ONLY passenger) and was forced to de-train at Union Point to catch the returning mixed Train #103 because time didn't permit me to ride to the end at Augusta. Train #103, the last mixed train's counterpart, met #108 here and I boarded #103 for the return trip to Atlanta. I don't remember the fare for a round trip to Union Point from Atlanta, but it was money well spent.

Description:  Cheating a bit to put this photo in an L&N album, but it's more about the location than the train. This spot is just south of where the St. Louis Metrolink LRV line departs the old L&N right of way to continue further east. Now all that's left here is a curved ridge that used to support the roadbed running through this same cultivated field. Back in 84, however, you could still catch the afternoon local headed west for E. St. Louis.

In a common practice at this location during this era, the "push" is being made `gainst the cab of the eastbound train climbing away from Opelika. The crossing/interlocking with Southern Railway's Columbus-Birmingham "P" line is just to the right of the lead locomotive. The east end of the O elika siding is just beyond the interlocking
