Caught standing in an unidentified yard ( possibly Bethlehem, PA) is this Alco-Schenectady 0-8-0 camelback switcher was built in December of 1913 as CNJ 275. Thanks to the research efforts of Chuck Zeiler, we have few more details about this unique loco. It was reclassified as an E1 in 1919 and again in 1945 as class 8553. Although I couldn't find any exact builder info on this CNJ 0-8-0C camelback, it was built in 1918 by either, Alco, Baldwin or CNJ shops with the latter being the best guess. The entire E1 class (later reclassified as 8S53 was scrapped between 1948-1954. No photographer was listed for this photo. |
