View from GM&O GP38-2 742 |
Description: |
This photo was taken from the cab of Gulf, Mobile & Ohio GP38-2 742 on a southbound ICG extra as it was about to enter the main line of the Southern Railway at Slidell, Louisiana. After the IC-GM&O merger on 10 August 1972 the regular operation of ICG trains over the Southern between Slidell and Oliver Junction in New Orleans ended, but extra trains continued to run occasionally as Southern No. 835. These trains delivered carloads of fabricated reinforcing bars from one of Laclede Steels’ two mills in the St. Louis area to its fabricating plant in New Orleans, which was located at the south end of the former GM&O CANAL YARD. The steel was being used for the construction of the LOUISIANA SUPERDOME, and this particular train consisted of one MKT gondola and GM&O 2993. |

Southbound ICG |
Description: |
In 1973, the year after the ICG merger, GM&O GP38 721 and GP38-2 744 lead a southbound train past the Bogalusa depot on its way to South Yard. After the merger, the ICG discontinued the regular operation of a through train from Bogalusa south to New Orleans; so almost all of the rail traffic moving into Bogalusa came in from the north on trains like this. Description: |
When the Gulf Mobile & Ohio merged with the Illinois Central on 10 August 1972, the regular use of the former railroad's CANAL YARD in New Orleans was largely discontinued; but in this view about a month later GP38-2 748 was ready to head north with three hopper cars and a caboose. The elevated track on the right was the scale and the building next to it was the yard office; while the bridge in the distance is the I-10 HIGH RISE over the Industrial Canal, which is off to the right. Gulf, Mobile & Ohio GP38-2 749 was at CANAL YARD in New Orleans just days before the merger with the Illinois Central on 10 August 1972. The regular use of CANAL YARD ended on the day of the merger, when almost all the former GM&O traffic began moving through the former IC MAYS YARD. The 749 had been built in April 1972, became ICG 9569 and retained the same number as an IC and CN-IC locomotive. It was still at work for the Canadian National 50 years later. Description: |
Looking at this scene, you might well imagine it to be immediately post-merger with the Illinois Central Green Diamond geep leading the GM&O GP38. Only the trailing Paducah re-build suggest that it may be a bit later. It is, in fact, a full seven years and counting since the birth of Illinois Central Gulf as this freight rolls through Freeburg, Illinois the day after Christmas in 1979. |
