NYC 4-6-4 #5451 - New York Central |
Description: |
Built by ALCo-Schenectady in April of 1938 originally as a NYC streamlined 4-6-4 Hudson #5451 (serial #68885), the streamline shrouding was removed in 1947. Nice to look at but according to most crews, a pain to service when the shroud was on. The loco lasted until retirement in February of 1956. Seen here a month later it has yet to be scrapped. Probably one of the last photos ever taken of it. Specs - originally streamlined, 79" drivers, impressive 265 psi boiler pressure, 22.5x29" cylinders, engine weight of 365,500 lb, tractive effort of 41,860 lb, booster unit tractive force of 12,100 lb. Unknown photographer. |
