Whiskey River 1919 rounds the bend approaching the tunnel back to the park |
Description: |
Whiskey River Railway Day 2021 (like nearly every other event everywhere, it was cancelled in 2020), the day when they run as many locomotives and trains as possible, ideally with all four of their operational steam locomotives. |

Toooooooot! Toot! |
Description: |
This is a popular spot to shoot this 16" gauge light railway, as they come down the back stretch on the return to the Little Amerricka park grounds. A slight uphill grade toward the tunnel makes for some stack talk from the steam locomotives, and there's always a whistle salute! The four tracks here belie the simple nature of the Whiskey River Railway's layout. Train is on the inbound main, to the right is the old outbound main (which, like the inbound main, goes through the tunnel), branching off of it is the "storage tunnel" lead (where the coaches are parked when not in use), then to the far right is the current outbound main. Trains pass through here after having gone through the Whistle Stop Campground loop (opened in 2017), then out to the farm fields before looping back to the amusement park. |

No. 1919 shoves its train into the storage tunnel as "Melody Ranch Special" makes its way back from the fields |
Description: |
At the conclusion of Whiskey River Railway Day 2021, the 1919 (after also picking up the two coaches which had been part of "Oakland Acorn"'s train on this day) made a "deadhead" run out through the tunnel, utilizing the now seldom-used portion of the outbound main between the switches where the campground loop branches off and then re-joins. |

"Railroads Of Pennsylvania," Page 31, 1942 |
Description: |
Here is page 20 of a 22-page article by William Moedinger, Jr., entitled "Railroads Of Pennsylvania." It was published originally in the October 1942 issue of "Trains" magazine, page 31. Bottom Photo Caption: "Favorite fan trip out of Philadelphia always includes a run over PRR's Downingtown-Lancaster Branch. Here the 1941 version stopped at the grade crossing with the Reading's Coatesville Branch. The point, too small for most maps, is called Suplee, Pa." Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #5713 and another locomotive whose number is not recorded. Both are G-5S (4-6-0) "Ten-Wheelers" built in Juniata. #5713 was built during September of 1924 and retired in March of 1950 after 26 years of faithful service. |

LV 4-6-2 #2033 - Lehigh Valley |
Description: |
This loco had a long and interesting life. It started out as LV 2-6-2C #794 built by Baldwin in 1906. The entire group of ten 2-6-2's were renumbered in 1905. LV #794 became LV 2-6-2 #2234. The LV Sayre Shops then rebuilt the 2-6-2's from 1906 into 4-6-2C camelback steam locomotive. This time the loco was renumbered LV 4-6-2C #2234. Finally, in August of 1920, the camelback 4-6-2 was rebuilt into a K-3 class standard cab 4-6-2 and renumbered 2033. The loco was met the scrapper's torch in July of 1951. Charles Winters photo |

CANADIAN PACIFIC G1s 2219 |
Description: |
CP Pacific 2219 was built by the CP's Angus Shops in 1910. The Pacific was fifty years old when I photographed her at Smiths Falls, Ontario on Easter Sunday 1960. You won't find a better looking 4-6-2. She was scrapped a year latter. The end of CP steam activity was only months away but you could still find clean engines that looked like someone cared. |
