UP #304 |
| Description: |
UP steam boiler-dormitory #304, built by AC&F in 1949 in Lot #3029 as baggage-dormitory #6006, 1 of 9 such cars (#6000-#6008) built in that Lot; 3 cars built in Lot #3037 (#9300-#9302) were delivered to the C&NW at the same time for use in the UP-C&NW-SP OVERLAND pool. These 12 cars had a steward's room (with sofa and upper berth) next to the baggage section, followed by 2 dormitory rooms with 2 sets of 2-tier bunks, followed by 3 dormitory rooms with 2 sets of 3-tier bunks. In 1960, 2 of the C&NW cars (#9300 and #9302) were rebuilt to baggage cars #8902 and #8903, while #9301 was sold in 1962 to NP and rebuilt to 30' RPO-dormitory #430. In 1962, 5 of the UP cars (#6000, #6008, #6001, #6004, and #6006) were rebuilt to steam boiler-dormitories #300-#304 in that order, and in 1972 the 4 un-rebuilt cars were sold to Amtrak as #1570-#1573. UP retained all 5 of the rebuilt steam boiler-dormitories until the head end power (HEP) conversion program of the business-and-excursion fleet, when #300 and #301 were sold; the 3 remaining cars, including #304, were further rebuilt at that time. #304 was first renumbered to UPP #209 in 1987, and in 1993 it was equipped with a generator to provide HEP (an additional generator was installed in 1997). However, the car also retains its steam boiler, which is used to provide additional/initial steam during the firing-up of either the #3985 or #844. During the 1993 rebuild, the 2 dormitory rooms with 2-tier bunks were converted to a single storage room (for the concessions car), and this room was later modified to a crew break room. At the same time, the 3 dormitory rooms with 3-tier bunks had these bunks replaced by a single bed (1 of these 3 rooms also was equipped with an office desk). Also, the steward's room became a crew luggage room. At the 1997 rebuild, the car was named HOWARD FOGG. A friendly guy alerted us that he was on the way and before we knew it, the beautiful UP Train SMRNL 24 crept into the depot at 12:44 P.M., 1 hour and 44 minutes late of it's original scheduled arrival of 11:00 A.M. It was well worth the wait for everybody, this is one sharp looking locomotive. They also did their monthly test of the Tornado Sirens just before the train arrived, so maybe the 844 will be pulling into town the next time I hear them. |

The steam train departed at exactly 1:00 P.M., just 16 minutes after arriving, but they departed 1 hour and 30 minutes late of their original scheduled departure of 11:30 A.M. The UPRR Special Agent walked along the tracks for a moment to keep any spectators from getting too close. I recorded a video of the train leaving after this photo. |

We were sure that we hadn't caught the train, but we saw 2 crossings with railfans and their cameras pointed to the south, so we knew we had to have passed it while the tracks were away from the highway in the woods. So, we pulled off, set up, and the train was doing 69 mph when it hit the detector. |

Here we see the train coming over the Ouachita River and Highway 7 just north of the town of Arkadelphia with UP 844 Pulling the South Central Express Heritage Tour 2006 as UP Train SMRNL 24. Engineer Steve Lee had just cracked the throttle on UP's FEF-3 Class 4-8-4 Northern "Living Legend" and the smoke rolled with the whole train in view. They also let off some water on an open convertable on the highway. My friend, Alex recorded an awesome video of it (and later nearly taped over it) and my dad watched. The other two fans took stills like I did. With highs in the mid 90s today and lots of sun, this was a great day to chase big steam through the Natural State! |

The Oklahoma Centennial Sooner Rocket operating as UP Train SWTEN 09 crests a small grade on the way from Wichita, KS to Enid, OK with a 14 car passenger consist in tow at about 30 mph. I don't think I could have asked for a better morning for big steam. This was the longest UP Passenger Train I'd ever seen, with 3 domes! Can't beat that! |
