Missouri River bridge  Contributor's Pick!
This bridge over the Missouri River was opened in 1894 and used by the RI, CGW/CNW and CB&Q/BN through 1987, when it was dismantled. This view looks east towards Missouri. The straight tracks head into Leavenworth, the curved section to the right was used by the CGW/CNW to access the MP main to Kansas City. Up through 1949 the CGW had an engine facility and wye on the other side of the river, at Stillings (Kirmeyer). This was as far south as their 2-10-4 Texas types came; weight restrictions and the curve kept them from going any further, the road typically using 2-8-2s to get their freight to KC.
