James J. Hill built the S.S. Minnesota and S.S. Dakota to handle trans-Pacific cargo for the GN and NP ca. 1900-1910, largest cargo ships in the world at the time; Smith's Cove was the off-loading point for silk to the GN and NP into the 1920s
