DRGW 4-6-6-4 #3706, Denver & Rio Grande Western  Contributor's Pick!
This is the fireman's side of the Baldwin Locomotive Works builder's photo from 1938. This massive locomoitve was D&RGW class L-105 built to haul heavy loads in rough terrains. According to SteamLocomotive.com, it had 70" drivers, developed 255 psi (some others list it as high as 280 psi) with 4 sets 23"x32" cylinders. The engine weight was a hefty 641,900 lb and it could create an enormous tractive effort of 104,833 lb. Unfortunately, the locomotive didn't even serve 20 years before being scrapped between 1951-56. There are no surviving DRGW Challengers. Because there was no choice for a 4-6-6-4 configuration on this site, it was listed as unknown.
