PAOLI Tower, along with the remarkably similar in appearance BRYN MAWR Tower were built by the PRR in 1896. PAOLI is two stories in height with a stone fondation, brick load-bearing first floor walls, and a wood-framed second floor with decorative recessed wood panels in between the windows. The tower once had a distinctive, rounded, projecting bay window facing trackside that contained the US&S Model 14 electro-pneumatic switch machine to control a full four track crossover as well as the entrance to Paoli Yard, a large passenger and freight facility. Most of the trackside facing wall was demolished after a train derailment in 1972. The repairs to the wall are still evident. At present, PAOLI is still used to control various train movement. |
