Slope to Works. Here is an original photo that I took in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 6 June 1965. Shown here (R to L) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #9537 and another unit whose road number is not recorded. Both were built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. #9537 is an EF-15 constructed in September of 1948 and retired in May of 1966 after just 18 years of revenue service. They're pulling a westbound train consisting of empty hopper cars past WORKS Tower, under the new version of the 4th Street Footbridge, and up the Allegheny Mountains to the coal mines of Western Pennsylvania. Looks like front-end air conditioning! (#33 of 44) |
