The Railroad of Firsts  Contributor's Pick!
1952 RR Publication full page advertisement caption included: Through a hundred years of progress the Erie has scored notable “firsts.” It was the first long-distance railroad. First to use telegraph in its operations. First to link the Atlantic seaboard with the Great Lakes. First to transport California fresh fruit to the New York market… and one of the first railroads to engage in major dieselization. Today 172 Alco-GE diesel-electrics – largest fleet of any builder – are helping this great railroad to win traffic back to the rails.
