PRR 4830, GG-1, 1955
PFJ. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Fred Kern that was taken at Frankford Junction near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on 28 September 1955. At the right is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #4830, a GG-1 (2-C-C-2) built in Juniata during June of 1935, rated at 4,620 horsepower, and retired in April of 1967. At the left is Reading Railroad engine #214, built during 1948. According to Mr. Ben Kranefeld, "The Reading locomotive pictured is not a Northern type, but rather a G3 'Pacific' (4-6-2). It should also be noted that the Reading G3 is more than likely heading up a PRSL-Wildwood bound train, rather than a railfan excursion."
