PRR 9601, AF-15, 1960
Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by David R. Sweetland that was taken in Gallitzin, Pennsylvania, in March of 1960. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engine #9601 and three more "AF" Class units whose road numbers are not recorded. All were built by the American Locomotive Company. #9601 was constructed in July of 1948, rated at 1,500 horsepower, and retired in December of 1963 after just 15 years of revenue service. In this context, this A-B-B-A set of locomotives has just passed through the Allegheny Tunnel pulling a long string of empty hopper cars back to the bituminous coal mines of frozen Western Pennsylvania.
