The daily RJ Corman turn from Guthrie, KY pops out of the tunnel at Palmyra. This is the only tunnel on the Memphis Line. The L & N increased the height of the tunnel in the 1960's for tri-level auto racks. This was done not by raising the tunnel ceiling, but lowering the tunnel floor. By doing so the railroad avoided disturbing the concrete lining of the tunnel. Daylighting the tunnel was considered, but ultimately abandoned due to there being a cemetery on the top of the hill above the tunnel. |
