Southern Railway train No. 47 – the southbound SOUTHERNER– had just backed into New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal behind FP7 6147 and an unidentified E8A. (Its scheduled arrival time was 7:10 PM.) Here, a carman had uncoupled the locomotives and was signaling the engineer with his lantern that he could pull ahead. The engine crew would then bring the power out to the engine terminal, where they would go off duty. When this photo was taken, the SOUTHERNER was frequently powered by an FP7 and an E8; but for most of its 29-year existence, the train ran with one or two E-units. (approximate date of photo) |
