Altoona Action. Here is an original photo by an unidentified photographer that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1966. Prominent here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #9731, a BF-16 built by Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton in February of 1951, rated at 1,600 horsepower, and retired in July of 1966 after just 15 years of revenue service. In this context, it's parked near the abandoned East Altoona Coaling Tipple. Along with most of the other locomotives pictured here, it will soon be scrapped. |
