General
My Dad worked at General Mills in the flour district in Buffalo. I model the mid 70's period. Prior to and for about 2 years after Conrail, you could still see hundreds of BCK boxcars on the yard tracks. General Mills still filled these boxcars through the open doors. You'd often see chalk marks saying the car delivered needed to be swept and cleaned. In 1978, General Mills alone used 10,000 railroad cars. Then, there was Pillsbury just down the street and Cargill, Peavey, Parot Malting etc. As the Conrail years progressed some of the flour mills closed. General Mills started to ship more by truck. Several sidings were taken out. As I understand now, as I live in Florida, many old mills have been fixed up for grain storage and ethanol production.
