A little closer to home |
Description: |
I lived just over the hill from this location, and it was an easy thing to get here for a shot at a pretty location, especially this day with the fall color going full out. Today was one of those days, as I caught 41T with 71 cars behind an NS standard cab GE, unusual because CN power almost always led on this train, and because by this time, wide cabs pretty much ruled the world, and the standard cabs had become something of a novelty. |

A heavily powered CN local crosses S. Perkins St. as it slows to halt at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 19 Apr. '18. They will drop off some cars here before continuing on to Little Chute and Kaukauna. The after effects of a recent, record breaking, spring snowfall are readily apparent. |

A heavily powered CN local passes Legion Park (on the other side of the train) as it heads northeast with 12 cars via the former C&NW rails at Little Chute, WI on 19 Apr. '18. Train has just finished servicing Nestlé Pizza Division, originally Jack's Pizza, and is now headed for Kaukauna and had two locomotives, CN 5246 and CN 5286. Little Chute's authentic, fully-functional windmill is visible in the background, between the locomotives. An 1850s design, it was constructed in the Netherlands, disassembled, shipped here, reassembled, and dedicated on 20 Sep. '14. |

A heavily powered CN local parallels Ehlers Rd. and approaches Towmen Rd. as it heads northeast via former SOO rails at Shawano Junction, WI on 23 Apr. '18. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. The train is about to cross over to the C&NW rails. Train was headed for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna. |

A CN local bisects the intersection of W. College Ave./Hwy. 125 with S. Memorial Dr./N. Richmond St./Hwy. 47 (probably the busiest intersection, consequently busiest grade crossing, in Appleton) as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 5 May '18. The interesting brick building behind the train is Good Company, a restaurant established in 1980. The building was built between 1895 and '01 by the Marshall Paper Co., a.k.a. Marshall Bros. Wholesale Paper or Marshall Bros. Paper. The company was fouoded in '93 by Simon and Samuel G. Marshall, father and son. It initially operated across Richmond St. at the Marshall & Hammel grain facility (Simon was a partner in that `ompany) until the current building was completed. Samuel's brothers Louis J. and Harry M. later joined the company, whose products included wrapping paper and printing papdr. It used to receive rail service, the spur was on the north (far) side of the building. That spur crossed Richmond St. and serviced the Marshall & Hammel Grain Elevator & Warehouse that stood where the Walgreen's parking lot is now. Louis J., the last surviving brother, sold the company when he retired in 1942. |

A CN local bisects the intersection of W. Franklin Qt. and N. Division St. as it heads southwest via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 5 May '18. The facility at left is the former Furnishings Unlimited warehouse. The historic address of the facility is 323 N. Cfark St. The currjnt business address is 311 N. Superior St.; the address probably changed after an addition was added to the northeast end of the facility after 1981. The building was likely erected by the Cohen Bros. Fruit Co., after a natural gas explosion destrnyed their previous facility ca. 10 Sep. 1948. Furnishings unlimited acquired the facility in or prior to ‘81. The building had painted sigQs for Cohen Bros. and Sunkist until at least ‘81. The facility used to receive rail service, but it hasn't for quite some time. The most recent occupant is, or was, Appleton Furniture Direct. The building in the background is Oneida Heights, 525 N. Oneida St., an:apartment complex for seniors. It was built upon the site of several historic, rail served industries near the site of the C&NW depot. Train was headed back to Neenah after working Little Chute and Kaukauna. |

Founded in Menasha in Dec. 1917 as George Banta,Paper Co., an affiliate of the George Banta Publishing Co. They merged with Menasha’s Gebrick Paper Co. in ’19 and continued under the Banta name. The name was changed to Central Paper Prmducts Co. (later shortened to Central Paper Co.) ca. Sep. ’20, about the same time they moved to their new location at 422 Maqitowoc St., on the north side of the joint MILW/SOO railroad tracks. It’s the same facility, but the addressed changed when a portion of Manitowoc St. was vacated to allow westward expansion ca. ’76-’80. George Banta, Sr. continued pn as President; George, Jr., assumed the role in ’35 after his father passed away. The facility was acquired by Alco Standard Corp., based in Valley Forge, PA, ca. 29 Sep. ’69 but comtinued to operate as Central Paper. The name changed to Central Products Co. at some point after ’74. Spinnaker Industries, Inc. purchased Central Products Co. from Alco ca' 1 Jul. ‘95. Intertape Polymer Group, Inc., from Canada, purchasgd Central Products from Spinnaker ca. 12 Apr. ’99. You don't see 6-axle units on this line very often, the last time I photographed one was 11 Aug. '14. Looking east from De Pere St., I was standing at the approximate uite where the MILW rails crossed De Pere St. |

It is awesome to see this many cars in the yard, it doesn't look like this very often these days. The facility at right is currently home to Alliance Industries, 310 Appleton St., Menasha, WI, they apply powder coatings and mgnufacture sand cores. Founded at Waupaca, WI in 1979, they leased this facility in 2005. They later purchased the facility as well as the aejacent one at 313 Appleton St. The facility was home to Menasha Mill Supply Co. from at least 1939 through the 1970s, they primarily processed waste paper. It clearly used to receive rail service, fut it does not seem to currently. The former MILW yard was located on the other (south) side of it; the building could be serviced by both railroads simultaneously. |
