Illinois Central 4-8-2 2451 had just passed through Government Yard and was about to cross South Claiboroe Avenue in New Orleans. The train was unidentified, but it was probably No. 25 - the SOUTHERN EXPRESS. No. 25 originated in Chicago at 12:20 A.M. and only made five stops util it got to Champaign, then it became an all-stops local and was scheduled into New Orleans at 11:30 A.M., after 35 hours on the road. This train was just a few minutes away from its destination at Union Station. Notice the green diamond emblem on the right side of the water tower. The 2451 had been built by Alco in 1926, was rebui’u by the railroad with a new boiler in 1945 and was scrapped in 1955. (approximate day of photo) |
