Title:  L&N Train No. 10
Description:  Louisville & Nashville K-5 class 4-6-2 265 was pulling train No. 10 out of Canal Street Station in New Orleans. The 265 was a USRA design light Pacific, and was the second of eight K-5's built by Baldwin in 1923 (264-271). It was retired on 1 February 1954. The track on the right belonged to the Southern Pacific, while the Illinois Central box car in the background was on a New Orleans Public Belt siding at the Bienville Street Wharf. Title:  L&N Train No. 7
Description:  Louisville & Nashville K-5 class Pacific 282 was leading Number 7 along the Mississippi River at New Orleans, just a block away from the train's destination at the Canal Street Station. The tracks on the left of the train belonged to the Southern Pacific, while most of those on the other side were owned by the New Orleans Public Belt. The grade crossing under the fourth car was Conti Street and the transit shed in the center of the image was on the Bienville Street Wharf. The tall buildings in the left background, including the new construction, were the Jax Brewery. (approximate month and day)

Title:  NOC&BT 12
Description:  The New Orleans Coal & Bisso Towboat Co. was located along the Mississippi River at Walnut Street, near Audubon Park. It was served by the New Orleans Public Belt Railroad, and used an assortment of steam locomotives to move hopper cars between a little yard along the NOPB and its coaling facility along the river. This facility was used to service Bisso’s own tugboats and ferries, and also supplied other coal-burning vessels up until the mid-1950’s.

Mogul No. 12 was built by ALCo-Pittsburg in April 1911 under serial no. 49999 as Crystal City & Uvalde No. 5 at Crystal City, Texas. The railroad had been charted on 19 April 1909 and it was renamed the San Antonio, Uvalde & Gulf Railroad on 4 April 1912. The engine was renumbered SAU&G 20 that September, became H. Weston Lumber Co. 12 at Logtown, Mississippi in 1925 via the Birmingham Rail & Locomotive Co., and went to Bisso at an unknown date. (approximate day and month)

Title:  IC 4-8-2 2405
Description:  Illinois Central 4-8-2 2405 was parked at the railroad’s GOVERNMENT YARD in New Orleans, just north of Union Station. It was one of 15 Mountains built for the IC by Alco’s Schenectady Works (64574) in October 1923 and was retired in February 1960, near the very end of steam operations on the IC. The loco on the left was 0-6-0 295.

Title:  SP Train No. 2
Description:  Nearly-new Alcos 200A and 200B bring train No. 2, the eastbound SUNSET, across South Claiborne Avenue, just a couple of minutes from their destination at the Illinois Central's Union Station. On the extreme left is the PANAMA LIMITED's observation car, in the coach yard. This is a somewhat unusual photo of the SUNSET with diesel power and mostly heavyweight cars. The next year, these Alcos would be renumbered 200 and 201, and the train would be completely reequipped with new cars from the Budd Co. (approximate date of photo)

Description:  New Orleans Public Service car 954 was parked at the outer end of the CLAIBORNE line, on South Claiborne Avenue at South Carrollton. This car line was replaced with buses on 5 January 1953. The 954 had been built by the Perley A. Thomas Car Works in 1924 and is still in use on the St. CHARLES line in 2020.

Title:  IC 2-8-2 3766
Description:  Illinois Central 2-8-2 3766 was switching passenger cars at Union Station in New Orleans. Built by Alco-Brooks in April 1907 as Indianapolis Southern 2-8-0 #3, became IC #795 in 1912, rebuilt to 2-8-2 in 1923 and initially numbered 3795, but it was modified with a higher boiler pressure in 1937 and renumbered 3766. Description:  New Orleans Public Service car 831 was inbound on the TULANE BELT on St. Charles Avenue at Fern Street, having just turned off of South Carrollton Avenue. It was wearing the window screens that were added to many of the TULANE and ST. CHARLES cars in the late 1940’s and early 1950’s. These were used to protect riders from the vegetation along the line, but didn’t last long. Car 831 had been built by the J.G. Brill Co. in 1922 and was scrapped in October 1951. Title:  NOPSI Streetcars at Carrollton Station
Description:  New Orleans Public Service streetcars 810, 853, 841 and 840 were at Carrollton Station, displaying either ST. CHARLES or TULANE route signs. All of these cars had been built in 1922, the 810 and 853 by Brill, and the 841 and 840 by Perley A. Thomas, and all were scrapped between 1951 and 1955. The last day of operation for the ST. Description:  Louisville & Nashville J-3 class 2-8-2 1548 was on a southbound train passing the Abaunza Steamship Agency wharf at the foot of Dumaine Street in New Orleans. The train had left its cars at GENTILLY YARD, on the east side of the city, and was heading for JULIA STREET YARD, where the crew would go off duty. Title:  SOU 2-8-0 6924
Description:  Southern Railway System (New Orleans & Northeastern) Ks3 class 2-8-0 6924 was parked near the railroad’s SCOTT STREET ROUNDHOUSE in New Orleans, displaying white flags and coupled to water car W.T. 6924 which had a full coal bunker. This locomotive was one of five Ks3 class Consolidations (6922-6926) built by Alco’s Richmond Works in 1926, and these were the newest, heaviest and most powerful steam locos used on the NO&NE. It was sold for scrap to Granite City Steel in December 1952. (approximate date of photo)

L&N Train No. 34
Title:  L&N Train No. 34
Description:  Louisville & Nashville K-5 class 4-6-2 265 was leading train No. 34 – the combined Piedmont Limited-Gulf Wind – out of Canal Street Station in New Orleans. The Piedmont Limited was bound for New York City via the L&N, West Point Route, Southern Railway, and the Pennsylvania; but between New Orleans and Flomaton, Alabama it included cars for the Gulf Wind. This latter train operated between Flomaton and Chattahochee, Florida as L&N No. 61 and on into Jacksonville as Seaboard Air Line No. 38. The train's third car was a Seaboard coach.

No. 34 left New Orleans at 5:00 P.M. and arrived in New York's Pennsylvania Station – 1,357 miles away – at 6:25 on the second morning out, while the Gulf Wind arrived in Jacksonville – 612 miles – at 9:00 on the first morning. The curved track on the extreme right belonged to the New Orleans Public Belt, the next two tracks were owned by the Southern Pacific, and the track next to No. 34 was the L&N's southbound main line. The 265 was built by Baldwin in 1923 and retired on 1 February 1954. (approximate day of photo)

Description:  Louisville & Nashville train No. 34, the combined Piedmont for New York and Gulf Wind for Jacksonville, had just gone through the curve from the Mississippi riverfront onto the median of Elysian Fields Avenue and was crossing Decatur Street. The Gulf Wind operated over the Seaboard Air Line west of Chattahochee, Florida and the third car is a Seaboard coach. No. 34 train was being pulled by K-5 class 4-6-2 269. It was one of 26 K-5 class USRA light Pacifics, and one of eight (264-271) built by Baldwin in 1923. It was retired on 7 July 1953. (approximate day of photo)

Title:  MP 4-6-2 1153
Description:  With bell ringing, the Missouri Pacific’s westbound ORLEANEAN was pulling out of the Illinois Central’s UNION STATION in New Orleans to begin its all-day trip to Houston. This train and its overnight counterpart, the HOUSTONIAN, operated over the Illinois Central for the 90 miles between New Orleans and Baton Rouge, where they crossed the Mississippi River. An IC express car was right behind the locomotive and would be set out at Baton Rouge, while the last car was a Pullman bound for Oakland, California via the Santa Fe. The 1153 was one of five Pacifies (1151-1155) built for MP subsidiary International-Great Northern in 1926 and transferred to the St. Louis, Brownsville & Mexico in 1947. All were scrapped by 1954, the same year Union Station was replaced by the new New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. (approximate month and day)

Description:  Out-of-service Southern Railway System (New Orleans & Northeastern) Ks class Consolidation 6903 was parked near the railroad’s SCOTT STREET ROUNDHOUSE in New Orleans, three months before it was officially retired. The locomotive had been built by Baldwin (31724) in 1907 as Cincinnati, New Orleans & Texas Pacific 723, was renumbered Southern Railway System 6203 in 1917 and was “sold” to the NO&NE as the 6903 in 1923. GM&O REBEL
Title:  GM&O REBEL
Description:  The Gulf Mobile & Ohio's LITTLE REBEL was photographed just outside of the Southern Railway's TERMINAL STATION, on Basin Street in New Orleans; but we can't tell if this was train No. 1 pulling into the station, or if it was backing out to be serviced at the GM&O's Canal Yard. The building in the background is the Municipal Auditorium.

Power car 352, along with the 353 and their trains, was built at American Car & Foundry's plant at Berwick, PA for the Gulf Mobile & Northern in 1935 for service between New Orleans and Jackson, TN. After the GM&N merged with the Mobile & Ohio to become the GM&O these trains were extended north to East St. Louis between 1942 and 1950. They were discontinued between New Orleans and Slidell on 8 March 1954, less than two weeks before New Orleans Union passenger terminal was placed into full operation. (approximate day of photo)

Description:  Coming out of the afternoon sun, Louisville & Nashville 4-6-2 245 powers train No. 10 across the Southern Railway main line at NO&NE Tower (milepost 802.7). Just a few years after this photo was taken, NO&NE Tower was replaced with a new brick structure named N.E. Tower. At about the same time, train No. 10 was discontinued. The 245 was the last of six K-5 class light Pacifics (240-245) assigned to the L&N by the United States Railroad Administration during the First World War. It was built by Alco-Richmond in 1919 and retired on 22 June 1954. (approximate day of photo)

Title:  L&N Pacific 269
Description:  Preceded by a flagman, Louisville & Nashville K-5 class Pacific 269 was rolling out of the railroad's trainshed and across Canal Street in New Orleans. The loco has just uncoupled from a southbound passenger train and was heading to the roundhouse at Julia Street Yard. The automobiles behind the flagman had just gotten off of a ferry boat from the west side of the Mississippi River, and the walkway above the loco provided pedestrian access to the ferry. The railroad closed Canal Street Station and the Julia Street roundhouse when its passenger trains moved to New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal in April 1954. (approximate day of photo)

Description:  SP train No. 5, the westbound ARGONAUT, was preparing to depart from Union Station in New Orleans behind Alco units 202 and 203. At this time, construction was underway on New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal, with the new express building going up on the other side of the 202. The two platforms here were built so that IC, SP and MP (GCL) trains could continue to operate while the old station was removed and the new station was completed. (approximate day of photo)

Description:  SP train No. 6, the eastbound ARGONAUT, was rolling through the Illinois Central's Government Yard and across South Claiborne Avenue on its way into Union Station. The 211 had been built a year earlier as the 205B, and was the last of the T&NO's 12 PA1's. When these units were renumbered, they also received a number on their noses. IC SW1 9027 is on the left, outside the railroad's Government Yard roundhouse. Most of the IC property here was acquired for the construction New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal and its related facilities. (approximate day of photo)

Description:  Missouri Pacific’s HOUSTONIAN, the overnight train between Houston and New Orleans, was arriving at Union Station in New Orleans behind Illinois Central 4-6-2 1194. The MP’s New Orleans-Houston trains operated over the Illinois Central (Yazoo & Mississippi Valley) between New Orleans and Baton Rouge. Along here, these trains carried IC as well as MP numbers, so this was IC No. 35 and MP No. 10; and in the steam era they were usually powered by IC locomotives. This train consisted of a baggage car, a baggage-RPO, two coaches, a café-lounge and an 8-section / 5-double-bedroom sleeper. IC 1194 had been built by Alco’s Schenectady Works in October 1920 and it was scrapped in 1953. (approximate date of photo)

Description:  Illinois Central 2-8-2 3772 was on a transfer run in New Orleans, on its way from STUYVESANT DOCKS YARD to MAYS YARD. AUDUBON PARK is on the left and the Mississippi River is off to the right. Description:  Texas & Pacific P-1r class 4-6-2 704 was backing into the New Orleans station with train No. 22, the LOUISIANA EAGLE, having just completed its overnight journey from Fort Worth. The locomotive had been built by Baldwin (51666) in April 1919 as P-1 class 604 but was quickly renumbered 704. In August 1944 it was upgraded with roller bearings and other improvements, and reclassed P-1r, and was retired in March 1952. (approximate date of photo)

L&N Mikado 1580
Title:  L&N Mikado 1580
Description:  Louisville & Nashville J-3 class Mikado 1580 had just crossed the New Orleans Terminal Co. (Southern Railway) tracks at N.O.T. Tower (milepost 803.7) and was crossing the Marigny.Canal. The engine had set out its cars at Gentilly Yard (milepost 800.4), and was on its way to Julia Street Yard (lilepost 806.4) - along with an auxiliary water car and caboose 683 - where the crew would tie up. The roof of N.O.T. Tower can be seen above the caboose. The 1580 was one of 93 USRA-design light Mikados on the L&N. The 1500-1517 were built by Lima in 1919, while the 1518-1592 were built by Alco between 1920 and 1923. The 1580 was retired on 12 December 1951. (approximate day of photo)

L&N Train No. 10
Title:  L&N Train No. 10
Description:  Louisville & Nashville K-5 class 4-6-2 282 was leading train No. 10 into the curve at the intersection of North Peters Street and Elysian Fields Avenue, just a few minutes after leaving the railroad's Canal Street Station. The tracks in the right foreground belonged to the Southern Pacific, while those on the other side of the train were owned by the New Orleans Public Belt. L&N 282 was a USRA design light Pacific and was one of the last 4-6-2's built for the L&N. It was one of a dozen K-5's (272-283) built by Alco-Brooks in 1924, and was retired on 8 January 1953.

The steamship JAMES LYKES was docked on the other side of the Esplanade Avenue Wharf. For many years the Lykes Brothers Steamship Company had a major presence in the port here. The ship was a C1-B design cargo vessel launched by Bethlehem Shipbuilding at Sparrows Point, Maryland in 1940 and it was broken up at Panama City, Florida in 1972. (approximate day of photo)

L&N 2-8-0 1279
Title:  L&N 2-8-0 1279
Description:  Louisville & Nashville 2-8-0 1279 was powering a southbound transfer run over the Bay Street grade crossing in New Orleans. The crossing was located between NO&NE Tower (milepost 802.7) and Franklin Avenue, and it was closed after the Franklin Avenue underpass was completed in April 1952. The track on the left was the north lead to Bay Street Yard, while the one on the right was the northbound main line. The 1279 was one of 47 H-27 class Consolidations. The 1234-1258 were built by Baldwin in 1910, while the 1259-1280 were built by the L&N at South Louisville Shops in 1910-1911; however, many of these locomotives were upgraded and reclassified as H-27A or H-27B. At this time, the 1279 did not have Automatic Train Stop equipment, so it could not be used on the main line between Mobile and Gentilly. It was retired on 7 July 1953. (approximate day of photo)

Description:  Home-made Southern Pacific (T&NO) SE-3 0-8-0 858 was on a westbound transfer run on the Southern Railway's New Orleans Terminal Co. subsidiary at Terminal Junction, about 15 miles from the T&NO's Avondale Yard. The substantial building behind the locomotive had been built by the Drainage Commission of New Orleans in 1898 to provide electrical power to its network of new pump stations on the north side of the city. Description:  Illinois Central mail-and-express train No. 22 was just getting under way at Union Station in New Orleans behind 4-8-2 2451. The train was leaving from one of two temporary platforms, as work was underway to replace Union Station with New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. Union Station was standing in the background, but it and would be torn down in January 1954 and NOUPT formally opened that April. IC 2451 had been built by Alco in 1926 and was scrapped in 1955. Description:  Louisville & Nashville K-5 Pacific 280 was pulling out of the railroad’s Canal Street Station in New Orleans with a short northbound train at. The train was noteworthy because it had a combine in front of its baggage car. The 280 was a USRA design light 4-6-2 and was one of a dozen K-5's (272-283) built by Alco-Brooks in 1924. Description:  Illinois Central 4-8-2 2451 had just passed through Government Yard and was about to cross South Claiboroe Avenue in New Orleans. The train was unidentified, but it was probably No. 25 - the SOUTHERN EXPRESS. No. 25 originated in Chicago at 12:20 A.M. and only made five stops util it got to Champaign, then it became an all-stops local and was scheduled into New Orleans at 11:30 A.M., after 35 hours on the road. This train was just a few minutes away from its destination at Union Station. Notice the green diamond emblem on the right side of the water tower. The 2451 had been built by Alco in 1926, was rebui’u by the railroad with a new boiler in 1945 and was scrapped in 1955. (approximate day of photo)

IC Train No. 22

Description:  Illinois Central train No. 22, the all-stops overnight local for Memphis3 was nearing its 5:30 p.m. departure from Union Station in New Orleans behind 4-8-2 2451. The train could make up to 47 stops before its scheduled arrival in Memphis at 9:05 the next morning. On 26 April 1954 train No. 22 was replaced by New Orleans-Chicago train No. 4, the NOUISIANE, which left at 11:00 a.m. The 2451 had been built by Alco in 1926, was rebuilt by the railroad with a new boiler in 1945 and was scrapped in 1955. L&N Train No. 9
Title:  L&N Train No. 9
Description:  Louisville & Nashville 4-6-2 233 hustles train Number 9 along the main line at the south end of Gentilly Yard (milepost 800.4). The semaphores are the southbound home signal for the Industrial Canal drawbridge (milepost 801.4), and the track on the right is the south yard lead.

Number 9 was the daily-except-Sunday Gulf Coast commuter train. It left Ocean Springs, Mississippi at 6:20 A.M. and arrived in New Orleans at 8:40 A.M. The train made scheduled stops at Biloxi, Long Beach, Gulfport, Pass Christian, Bay St. Louis, and Waveland; with flag stops at Edgewater Park, Mississippi City, Henderson's Point, English Lookout, Rigolets, Lake Catherine, and Chef Menteur.

The 233 was one of 24 K-4 class Pacifics (216-239) constructed at the railroad's South Louisville Shops between 1914 and 1918. It was built in 1915 and retired on 16 October 1951. Number 9's outer terminal – and that of its northbound counterpart, Number 12 – was changed to Pass Christian on 2 May 1959, and the trains made their last run on 6 May 1964. L&N Train No. 10
Title:  L&N Train No. 10
Description:  in 1951-52 the Louisville & Nashville constructed a temporary shoo-fly at Franklin Avenue, about midway between N.O.T. Tower (milepost 803.7) and NO&NE Tower (milepost 802.7) in New Orleans, so that an underpass could be built. Here local No. 10 was coming off of the north end of the temporary trackage and back onto the permanent alignment. It was passing a temporary approach signal for New Orleans Terminal Co. crossing. This train was powered by 4-6-2 234, one of 24 K-4 class Pacifics (216-239) constructed at the railroad's South Louisville Shops between 1914 and 1918. The 234 was built in 1917. New FP7 diesels officially replaced steam engines on local trains 7, 9, 10, and 12 on Friday 27 July 1951; and the 234 was retired less than three months later, on 16 October 1951. L&N Train No. 10
Title:  L&N Train No. 10
Description:  Louisville & Nashville K-5 class Pacific 273 was accelerating northbound train No. 10 out of the railroad's Canal Street Station in New Orleans. The train consisted of two mail-and-express cars, a railway post office car, two more mail-and-express cars, and three coaches. No. 10 left New Orleans daily – except Saturday and Sunday – at 3:30 PM and arrived in Mobile at 8:20 PM. On Sunday it left at 5:15 PM, and on Saturday it ran as No. 14 and left at 2:00 PM. The 273 was built by Brooks in 1924, and was retired on 24 May 1951, shortly after this photo was taken. The three tracks in the foreground belonged to the New Orleans Public Belt, and an NOPB Baldwin diesel can be seen down near the L&N train shed. (approximate day of photo)

L&N Train No. 34

Description:  Louisville & Nashville 4-6-2 280 was awaiting the departure of train No. 34 – the combined Piedmont Limited-Gulf Wind – from Canal Street Station in New Orleans at 5:00 PM. The Piedmont Limited was bound for New York City via the L&N, West Point Route, Southern Railway, and the Pennsylvania; but between New Orleans and Flomaton, Alabama it included cars for Jacksonville via the Gulf Wind. Today's train was unusual because it had a combine ahead of its baggage car, probably a dead-head move. The 280 was a USRA design light 4-6-2 and was one a dozen K-5's (272-283) built by Alco-Brooks in 1924. Bisso 0-6-0 1
Title:  Bisso 0-6-0 1
Description:  Former Texas Pacific-Missouri Pacific Terminal Railroad of New Orleans (TPMPT) 0-6-0 number 1 was photographed in September 1951 at its new home, the New Orleans Coal & Bisso Towboat Co. The loco – and its sibling No. 2 – had been built by Alco-Richmond in June 1907 (42928-42929) as Trinity & Brazos Valley 75 and 76, for use at Galveston; but following the T&BV’s bankruptcy in 1914, the railroad lost its access to Galveston from Fort Worth over the Santa Fe and the two switchers became redundant.

The City of Houston bought the two locomotives via the Barry Equipment Co. in 1917 and they arrived on 31 March lettered Houston Municipal 1 and 2. They were leased to the International & Great Northern from March 1918 until October 1921, and were sold to Grant Locomotive and Car Works [of Houston] in1922. They subsequently moved to the TP-MPT where they retained their previous numbers.

In early 1948 the TP-MPT received four Alco S2 diesels, and the 0-6-0’s were sold to Bisso by August 1949. Besides operating coal-burning towboats and ferries, Bisso also provided coal for other vessels and used its locos to move hopper cars from a 2-track yard along the New Orleans Public Belt then up the Mississippi River levee to its coal-handling facility along the river. Bisso’s coaling operation ended around 1955, and with it, the need for any locomotives. No. 1 disappeared, and was probably scrapped; but No. 2 remained on Bisso property until 2010, when it was donated to the Louisiana Railway Heritage Trust. (approximate date of photo)

The train was passing under the pedestrian walkway to the Mississippi River ferry landing off to the right, while the Louisville & Nashville station is on the left. The 20, along with the 21 and 22, were the railroad's newest steam locomotives, having been built by Baldwin in January 1921.
