Description:  Volkmer. Here is an image of a photo by William D. Volkmer that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 23 March 1959. Shown here passing under the 24th Street Bridge (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8673, #8666, and #8669. All are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company in 1958 and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. #8666 was constructed in February, while #8669 and #8673 were built in March. They're on their way back to East Altoona after completing another helper/pusher run up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and back. The large structure in the right distance is the Jaffa Temple. Both were built by the American Locomotive Company. #8666 is an AS-18AM constructed in February of 1958 and rated at 1,800 horsepower. They're hauling a fully-loaded mineral train down the Allegheny Mountains to the Receiving Yards in Altoona.

Description:  Oil Power. Here is an original photo that I took near Cresson, Pennsylvania, during April of 1962. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8666 and #8661. Both are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company in 1958 and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. They are pulling a string of loaded hopper cars toward Cresson, where they will merge with the mainline and proceed down the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to the Eastbound Receiving Yards in Altoona. Photo taken from a moving automobile at a place where the Irvona Branch parallels US Route 22 (Admiral Peary Highway), just West of Cresson.
